Outside Machinist- First Class

Basic Purpose and Function:
This skilled position is responsible for removing, repairing/replacing and reinstalling equipment and machinery components for repairs to ships and vessels in the United States Navy, United States Coast Guard, Military Sealift Command (MSC), and commercial vessels. He/She must be able to complete and execute the assigned work tasks following regulatory specifications assigned to the vessel.
Skills
- Ability to remove, repair, overhaul and install ships equipment and machinery.
- Ability to rig equipment and machinery in and out of the interior ship compartments.
- Ability to use hand and power tools to remove and reinstall equipment and machinery.
- Working knowledge of hazardous material disposal.
- Ability to regularly work at heights and in confined spaces.
- Ability to work non-standard work hours, as required.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Education and Experience:
- Two (2+) years of relevant marine experience preferred.
- High School diploma or equivalent required
- Proven working knowledge of the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) Standard Items.
- Working knowledge of local NAVSEA Standard Items, with a specific focus on the Southeast Regional Maintenance Center (SERMC).
Major Responsibility (Functions/Duties):
- Removes, repairs, overhauls, installs and aligns equipment systems such as condensers, compressors, pumps, forced draft blowers, main feed pumps, various types of valves, cargo-handling machinery, anchor handling gear, boat davits, cranes, elevators, conveyors, firefighting equipment, machine shop equipment, galley, and laundry equipment.
- Moves machinery and equipment using hoists, dollies, rollers, and trucks.
- Dismantles machinery and equipment for shipment to the installation site while performing installation and maintenance work as part of the team.
- Installs and repairs foundations for operating machinery and principal structures/components of the ship's armament. Levels bedplates and establishes centerline, using straightedge, levels, and transit. Inserts shims, adjusts the tension on nuts and bolts, or position parts, using hand tools and measuring instruments to set specified clearances between moving and stationary parts.
- Lays out mounting holes using measuring instruments and drills holes with a power drill. Installs, adjusts, sets, repairs, or replaces various control/regulating or safety devices such as meters, gauges, valves, governors, and automatic alarms.
- Tests or assists in testing shipboard machinery, pier-side or on sea trials, to prove satisfactory operation and acceptance.
- Uses various portable and fixed machine tools, such as boring bars, milling machines, facing machines, and drill presses.
- Uses precision measuring instruments, such as height gages, depth gages, calipers, veneers, and various types of micrometers, and assists in using optical equipment.
- Connects power unit to machines or hydraulic piping to equipment, and tests units to evaluate its mechanical operation.
- Replaces a machine's defective parts or adjusts clearances and alignments of moving parts.
- Repairs and lubricates machines and equipment.
- Signals crane operators and hoist operators for precise placement of machinery and equipment.
- Aligns machines and equipment using hoists, jacks, hand tools, squares, rules, micrometers, and plumb bobs.
- Assembles and installs machinery and equipment using hand tools and power tools
