POSITION PURPOSE:

The Community Outreach Coordinator will assist the National Park Service (NPS) ‘s River, Trails, and Conservation Program (RTCA) in supporting Texas communities with recreation and conservation planning through graduate-level communications, planning, and design skills and with AYW’s continuous conservation planning.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES:

Under direct supervision from the Conservation Corps. Director , the Recreation and Conservation Planning Intern will perform the following functions:

  1. Assist River, Trails, and Conservation Program (RTCA) staff with public engagement work for the Travis County Parks Comprehensive Plan update
  2. Collaborate with RTCA staff on organizational development for Picnics en el Arroyo, a family-oriented outdoor educational program serving Central Texas.
  3. Assist with assessment and project management of Missions Trail project in El Paso County, to include
    1. route assessment
    2. complete streets planning,
    3. public engagement data.
  4. Participate in RTCA professional development events and trainings.
    1. Train in the work and process of NPS-RTCA
  5. Assist with other ongoing projects
    1. writing recreation and trail plans,
    2. site analysis,
    3. conceptual design,
    4. public engagement,
    5. summarizing feedback,
  6. Analyze RTCA’s presence and relevance in Texas-Mexico border communities and gather contacts for outreach and potential projects.
  7. Familiarize with ongoing RTCA projects and initiatives in Texas, involving Austin and El Paso offices
  8. Work with AYW Conservation Corp Director to assist with conservation plans
  9. Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Required

EDUCATION / CERTIFICATION: Master’s Degree

EXPERIENCE: Relevant experience in areas pertaining to, but not limited to, park and recreation planning, urban studies, urban planning, community and regional planning, public engagement, landscape architecture, and site design.

Preferred

EDUCATION Master’s degree in urban or community planning, recreation planning, or landscape architecture.

EXPERIENCE: Experience with park or recreation projects

WORKING MODEL AND CONDITIONS:

ENVIRONMENT: Hybrid

INDOORS: Environmentally controlled conditions, working in an office or shared office setting, working with others in a group or team; contact with others (face-to-face, by telephone, or otherwise), No hazardous conditions. 

ATTENDANCE: Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM workweek; 1 hour unpaid lunch break;

TRAVEL: Travel to relevant communities and project sites
