About the Role

The Texas Workforce Commission is seeking a highly skilled Recreation/Life Skills Instructor to join our team at the Criss Cole Rehabilitation Center. As a key member of our team, you will play a vital role in helping individuals with disabilities achieve their employment goals and improve their overall quality of life.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan, organize, and conduct educational and instructional teaching programs for blind or visually impaired students, focusing on habilitative or rehabilitative needs.
  • Provide instruction in self-help or self-care and vocational skills to assist customers in attaining their optimum levels of independent living and vocational goals.
  • Coordinate or lead student-related activities, including rock climbing, camping, ropes courses, and various competitive sports and gym workouts.
  • Transport students to scheduled appointments and activities, utilizing public transportation when necessary.
  • Assist with development of scheduling, student activities, and provide class coverage for optimum student learning.
  • Provide community-based opportunities to enhance and support soft skills, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Coordinate and provide training for students who are blind in Life Skills classes and specific skills activities as they relate to individual student goals.
  • Assist in or lead multiple activities to enhance student independence.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in Therapeutic Recreation or Therapeutic Recreation Certification.
  • Experience in planning, teaching, and evaluating in a training program environment, individually and in group settings, to adults with disabilities.
  • Experience in assessing students' functional levels and planning an individualized program of instruction with or on behalf of the customer.
  • Knowledge of rehabilitative assessment techniques and tools of the rehabilitative process.
  • Able to obtain First Aid and CPR certification within the first six months of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in Therapeutic Recreation or Therapeutic Recreation Certification.
  • Experience in planning, teaching, and evaluating in a training program environment, individually and in group settings, to adults with disabilities.
  • Experience in assessing students' functional levels and planning an individualized program of instruction with or on behalf of the customer.
  • Knowledge of rehabilitative assessment techniques and tools of the rehabilitative process.
  • Able to obtain First Aid and CPR certification within the first six months of employment.
