Accounting Manager

Under the direction of our Chief Financial Officer, the Accounting Manager oversees finance operations and accounting tasks performed in the Finance Department. Our ideal candidate provides supervisory guidance to a team of 3-4 and oversees their work plans, training, and professional development. The Accounting Manager is responsible for ensuring BVHP’s finance operations run smoothly, while managing concurrent projects with competing deadlines, in addition to incorporating process improvements where possible. The incumbent needs to be proficient with policies and procedures, accounting principles, and reporting requirements.


The Accounting Manager manages a team of 2-3 professionals and additional outside consultants. This position reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer and works closely with the Chief Financial Officer and other leaders. This is a full-time, exempt position, based on site or hybrid in San Francisco.

Bayview Hunters Point Foundation has been at the heart of social justice for over 50 years, providing support services for predominantly low-income people of color in the Bayview and throughout San Francisco.

Our mission is to build a community that is empowered, clean, safe, and healthy. We are focused on multidisciplinary, community-informed support for our clients, addressing the root causes of unemployment and homelessness, and advocating for the basic human rights of food, health, economic and housing security.


Today, BVHPF’s nearly 200 employees serve over 5,000 disadvantaged clients each year. Our programs include:

• Mental health counseling for youth and adults

• School-based mental health services

• Substance abuse counseling and methadone treatment

• Family transitional and supportive housing

• Rapid rehousing and flex pool housing programs

• Case management services at several homeless and housing programs

• Bayview SAFE Navigation Center

These programs are funded through nearly 20 contracts with the City & County of San Francisco, and are monitored and regulated by several authorities, including CCSF and the State and Federal government.


Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Day to Day: Assist CFO with development of annual budget and periodic forecasts. Review all deposits, monitor cash balances, and manage cash flow. Process and track contributions and grants in collaboration with the Development Department; reconcile donation system records. Evaluate existing accounting processes; recommend improvements to methods, procedures, and systems; and implement approved changes. Maintain and update as appropriate accounting procedures specific to the bookkeeping of the organization. Prepare monthly reports for department heads. Other duties and responsibilities as assigned like performing ad hoc analysis and reporting as needed.
  • General Ledger Management: Oversee general ledger activities to ensure the accuracy of all general ledger accounts. Review and approve allocations and transactions; oversee account reconciliations, maintain schedules; perform cost allocations; and prepare releases of net assets from restriction. Ensure proper internal controls are in place. Manage the month-end closing process to ensure a timely and accurate close.
  • Cash Management: Monitor and maintain daily balances on cash accounts to ensure that the organization has the necessary funds to pay vendors, grantees, and staff. Reviews and approves the processing of weekly disbursement batches to ensure accuracy of booking.
  • Automated Accounting Systems and Integrations: Oversee effective integration and use of automated accounting systems. Support system integration with other teams such as Human Resources to ensure accuracy and reconciliation between functions.
  • Accounts Receivable: Build and maintain good working relationships between the primary funders: San Francisco Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing (HSH), DPH, Five Keys Schools and Programs and The San Francisco Sheriff’s office. Oversee and manage invoicing off all contracts monthly by the 15th day of the following month. Oversee timely collections of accounts receivables.
  • Financial Reporting: Prepare monthly and quarterly financial statements and create tools to present data that is easily understood by staff and the Board to understand the organization’s financial performance. Prepare timely reports and financial analysis.
  • Revenue and Projections: Review revenue projections and provides analysis for budget planning and implementation.
  • Audit, Insurance and Tax Preparation: Manage and provide support for annual audit, 990 tax return, and Worker’s Compensation audit including collaboration with auditors and preparation of all necessary schedules Support the Controller as the primary liaison to auditors in the preparation and review of the annual financial statements and during fieldwork to ensure their needs are met. Prepare various tax filings including property and sales tax, state fundraising filings, business license renewal and supports the outside accountants in preparation of IRS Form 990 to ensure compliance.
  • Compliance: Work to create, build and foster a culture of ethics and compliance within the organization. Revise and disseminate the organization’s accounting policies and assist the Controller in monitoring and enforcing them. Conducts or oversee finance policies orientations with new staff and provides ongoing refreshers for staff. Supports the Controller with compliance with laws and regulations governing the agency.


Minimum Requirements and Experience:

· Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

· Minimum 7+ years of related and management experience (in a non-profit is a bonus)

· Experience working in a nonprofit with City and Government funding

· Broad knowledge of the organization's operational, personnel, and financial transactions and systems

· Broad knowledge of financial transactions and systems, as well as related policy, accounting, and regulatory compliance requirements

· Basic knowledge of industry best practices

· Thorough interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively across the organization at all levels

· Strong skills using common desktop / web applications

· Broad service orientation skills; proven ability to multi-task effectively in a varied, high volume environment; sound judgment and decision-making skills; and reasoning ability to develop original ideas to solve problems

· Strong verbal and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

· MBA

· CPA / Certified Public Accountant

· Professional certification

Physical & Additional Requirements:

· At least two COVID-19 vaccinations (preferred).

  • Regular and reliable in office able job attendance.
  • Valid California’s Driver’s License (if duties require).
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Able to meet federal, state and local standards following a comprehensive background screening.
