Accounting Manager

POSITION SUMMARY
The position is a supervisory role who will manage a set of accounting activities to ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles, corporate policies, and government regulations. This person will manage the month-end financial closing process, prepare internal and external financial statements, as well as manage the year-end financial audit. The position will report to and work closely with the Corporate Controller and others in the organization in development and implementation of accounting policies, procedures, and controls. This role will assist in M & A due diligence, as well as developing the accounting and reporting for new business units. The position will be responsible for the accuracy of financial information and reporting on a consolidated basis and any new business units acquired according to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
The candidate needs to possess leadership capabilities, solid operational and technical accounting background, works proactively to drive results in process improvements, identifies weaknesses in accounting controls and recommends improvements, has a strong attention to detail and is action and goal oriented in a fast paced, team oriented and collaborative environment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESManage the monthly financial close process, including ensuring all costs incurred are properly recorded, reviewing journal entries, account balance reconciliations and the preparation of consolidated financial statements and supporting schedules. Prepare summary analysis of financial statement variances. Directly responsible for closing, reviewing and accurate reporting for current and any additional business units acquired.
- Manage up to four Accountants and/or Senior Accountants, ensuring their work is accurate and completed in a timely manner, as well as assigning special projects.
- Manage customer programs accounting, reporting and weekly/monthly reviews with Sales and the Executive Team.
- Work closely with departmental managers in reviewing their cost centers and provide variance analysis to ensure accurate postings to general ledger.
- Proactively seeks, recruits, and leads discussions with departmental managers to identify areas of improvement.
- Work closely with the accountant responsible for Fixed Assets to ensure proper filing of property tax renditions, accurate accounting of capital assets, depreciation methods and impairment analysis. Work with Cost Accountants and Operation team to comply with ASC 842.
- Managing accountant responsible for sales tax returns and related third party filer.
- Lead annual audit and work with the external auditors to ensure final audit report is issued 90 to 120 days depending on the required date per credit agreement or agreed upon by owners. Prepare a detailed timeline of required audit schedules and assign and track schedules prepared by accounting staff. Assist with the preparation of the audited financial statements, footnotes and reconcile footnote schedules prepared by staff.
- Work closely with our Information Technology department on improving system efficiencies and business practices.
- Manage and assist in developing and documenting internal control procedures, as well as participating in strategic financial projects including implementation of acquisitions and software’s.
- Analyze the effect of statutory accounting practices and studies regulations and guidance to ensure correct application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. Communicate with external auditors on accounting issues to ensure auditor agreement with company decisions on accounting application and disclosures.
- Assist with ASC 805 guidance to ensure compliance with technical application of M & A activity including due diligence and preparation of purchase accounting. Assist with the design and implementation of financial reporting for all acquisitions.
- Strong leadership, communication skills and ability to effectively persuade and work cross-functionally at all levels.
- Certified Public Accountant and public accounting experience preferred.
- Industry experience with a distribution and/or manufacturing company, preferably in the consumer goods industry but not required.
- Excellent knowledge of US GAAP and the ability to research and propose company positions on complex accounting issues.
- Ability to translate data analysis into financial concepts and information to members of the management team.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, speaks clearly and persuasively in positive and negative situations, demonstrates group presentation skills, and conducts meetings.
- Corporate, State and Sales tax knowledge but does not need to be an expert.
- Three years managerial skills and experience
- Oracle EBS preferred but not required.
- Works independently, displays readiness to undertake or instigate projects on his or her own.
- Strong mathematical and data analytical skills.
- High proficiency with Microsoft Excel
- High attention to detail and accuracy. Self-starter and creative problem solver.
- Advanced organization skills with attention to detail, prioritizes and plans work activities, uses time efficiently and develops realistic action plans.
