DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE TO: CYFS School and Tutorial Education Coordinator
SUMMARY OF POSITION: An Industrial Arts Teacher at Ch.O.I.C.E. Academy serves youth with significant emotional and behavioral challenges in small group and individual settings. They develop and implement a curriculum that emphasizes practical skills in woodworking, metalworking, and drafting, tailored to the unique needs of each student. The teacher's role includes fostering a safe, supportive environment where students can develop technical proficiency and craftsmanship while employing therapeutic strategies to enhance their academic and cognitive skills. By integrating the CYFS educational philosophy, the Industrial Arts Teacher helps students build independent critical thinking skills and guides them to become reflective, self-sufficient thinkers and lifelong learners.
SPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Design and implement academic curriculum and instruction appropriate to the needs of a group milieu as well as accommodate for individualized student need.
- Plan and implement cross content curriculum within shop environment.
- Requisite necessary teaching materials and equipment within the available budget.
- Implement social and behavioral programming for each student in the classroom.
- Develop positive and therapeutic working relationships with youth, families and staff.
- Communicate well with all parties involved with the youth, both verbally and in writing.
- Accept and respond to administrative and professional supervision.
- Complete all Academy and agency required paperwork completely and in a timely manner.
- Work consistently within the mission of the program.
- Follow and implement all Academy and agency policies and procedures.
- Willingness to learn de-escalation and passive restraint techniques.
- Ability to restrain youth who are a danger to self or others.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
- Experience with woodworking.
- Teaching license in the appropriate area of instructional specialization preferred.
Experience:
- Teaching experience with children with severe emotional and behavioral challenges or other mental health issues preferred.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Computer literacy necessary.
- Needs excellent organization and time management skills.
- Ability to interact well with parents, school staff, WCMHS staff, and other professionals.
- Valid driver’s license, excellent driving record, and access to a safe, reliable, insured vehicle is required.
- Ability to restrain youth who are a danger to self or others.
- Able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Able to navigate through an office space with or without accommodation.
- Able to shift from a sitting to standing position with or without accommodation.
- Able to walk up to one mile in one session.
- Able to drive a vehicle with or without accommodation.
