With a resident-centric approach, we manage over 8,000 apartment units in 50+ communities, providing educational programs and social services through our Resident Services team.

About the Team

The finance team at Affordable Homes and Communities (AHC), is responsible for managing critical financial functions essential to the organization's mission. This includes overseeing budgeting, financial reporting, regulatory compliance, cash management, treasury operations, tax compliance, audit preparations, and financial analysis. Collaborating closely with other departments, the finance team ensures financial sustainability, transparency, and accountability in delivering affordable housing solutions to communities in need.

Position Purpose

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller leads the Finance team, responsible for all aspects of financial accounting and reporting activities for corporate and real estate operations. The Controller will ensure implementation and execution of internal control guidelines, policies, and procedures for budget accounting, cash and credit management, administration, and other activities. The Controller will oversee and report on the achievements of all strategic and measurable objectives outlined in AHC’s Strategic Plan. Additionally, the Controller will cultivate excellence among the team ensuring alignment with AHC’s mission and core values.

Responsibilities

Financial Accounting and Reporting

  1. Oversee the accounting and reporting process to ensure monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports are prepared in an effective and timely manner for non-profit parent companies and all real property investments.
  2. Ensure timely and accurate completion of all corporate reporting deliverables and investment reporting deadlines.
  3. Lead the development and management of all corporate reporting systems to ensure technology solutions are efficient and aligned with corporate reporting goals.
  4. Manage and continuously improve various reporting deliverables; lead the annual reforecasting process including preparation of financial data to the Executive Committee and quarterly reporting to parent company board of directors.
  5. Perform regular variance analysis, profitability, and other ad hoc analysis as required.
  6. Assist CFO with design and selection of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and Metrics for alignment with company strategic plan.

Compliance

  1. Responsible for leading corporate and project accounting functions in technical interpretations of new GAAP rules and ensure proper application to current reporting.
  2. Responsible for timely completion of annual financial audits of parent entities and real estate investments.
  3. Responsible for coordination with external tax preparer and timely completion of all tax returns.
  4. Develop and execute all necessary control objectives required to meet annual audit standards for testing and certification.

Treasury Management

  1. Prepare cash management and cash flow forecasting reports for CFO.
  2. Assist CFO with capital planning, loan restructuring, tax planning, M&A and cash management strategies.

Budgeting

  1. Work with the Vice President of Asset Management to set standards for budgeting, property performance metrics and critical reporting deadlines.
  2. Assist with Annual Strategic Plan Process; work with senior management and senior leadership to develop revenue and expense budgets across multiple business units.

  7. Exhibits a proactive approach to conflict resolution and problem-solving.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) in Finance, Accounting or related field; graduate degree preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in accounting and reporting; real estate experience required.
  • At least 5 years of supervisory experience.
  • CPA required; public accounting experience highly preferred.
  • Previous non-profit experience highly desired
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships across a complex organization.
  • Sense of urgency and responsiveness with proven ability to multi-task.
  • Business and financial acumen; solid business judgment and decision-making.
  • Must demonstrate leadership skills, intellectual strength, personal motivation, problem solving, and solid written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficiency in computer skills and Microsoft Office Suite (Word and Excel).
  • Proficiency with Yardi, MIP/Abila, MRI.
