With a focus on resident needs, we manage a substantial portfolio of apartment units, providing educational initiatives and social services through our dedicated Resident Services team.

About the Team

The finance team at AHC plays a crucial role in managing essential financial functions that support the organization's mission. This includes responsibilities such as budgeting, financial reporting, regulatory compliance, cash management, treasury operations, tax compliance, audit preparations, and financial analysis. The finance team collaborates closely with other departments to ensure financial sustainability, transparency, and accountability in delivering affordable housing solutions to communities in need.

Position Purpose

Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer, the Financial Controller leads the Finance team, overseeing all aspects of financial accounting and reporting for corporate and real estate operations. The Controller is responsible for the implementation and execution of internal control guidelines, policies, and procedures related to budget accounting, cash and credit management, administration, and other financial activities. Additionally, the Controller will monitor and report on the achievement of strategic objectives outlined in AHC's Strategic Plan, while fostering a culture of excellence within the team that aligns with AHC's mission and core values.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Accounting and Reporting

  1. Oversee the accounting and reporting processes to ensure that financial reports are prepared accurately and in a timely manner for all stakeholders.
  2. Ensure the timely completion of all corporate reporting deliverables and investment reporting deadlines.
  3. Lead the development and management of corporate reporting systems to ensure that technology solutions are efficient and aligned with reporting goals.
  4. Manage and enhance various reporting deliverables; lead the annual reforecasting process and prepare financial data for executive review.
  5. Conduct regular variance analysis, profitability assessments, and other ad hoc analyses as needed.
  6. Assist the CFO in designing and selecting Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and Metrics that align with the company's strategic plan.

Compliance

  1. Lead corporate and project accounting functions, ensuring proper application of new GAAP rules to current reporting.
  2. Ensure timely completion of annual financial audits for parent entities and real estate investments.
  3. Coordinate with external tax preparers to ensure timely completion of all tax returns.
  4. Develop and execute necessary control objectives to meet annual audit standards.

Treasury Management

  1. Prepare cash management and cash flow forecasting reports for the CFO.
  2. Assist the CFO with capital planning, loan restructuring, tax planning, and cash management strategies.

Budgeting

  1. Collaborate with the Vice President of Asset Management to establish standards for budgeting and property performance metrics.
  2. Support the Annual Strategic Plan Process by working with senior management to develop revenue and expense budgets across multiple business units.

Staff and Team Leadership

  1. Promote a culture of excellence and innovation within the finance department, aligning with AHC's mission and values.
  2. Foster a collaborative work environment, providing mentorship and support to ensure team success.
  3. Implement effective communication strategies to enhance productivity and streamline workflows.
  4. Oversee hiring, training, and performance evaluations to maintain a high-performing team.
  5. Encourage professional development and continuous learning within the team.
  6. Design and deliver professional learning focused on housing stability and economic mobility.
  7. Approach conflict resolution and problem-solving proactively.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field; a graduate degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in accounting and reporting, with real estate experience required.
  • At least 5 years of supervisory experience.
  • CPA certification is required; public accounting experience is highly preferred.
  • Previous experience in the non-profit sector is highly desired.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships across a complex organization.
  • Demonstrated sense of urgency and responsiveness with the ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Solid business judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word and Excel) and familiar with Yardi, MIP/Abila, MRI.
