Job Overview:

 

Environmental Scientist with 2-5 years of experience in environmental restoration projects, preferably for United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) or other federal and state government agencies. Prospective candidates must have experience with site investigation, characterization, and remediation projects regulated by ADEC and/or EPA. The work schedule will be a combination of office, urban and field work, including locations such as Unalaska and/or other areas of rural Alaska.

 

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with the Project Manager and Lead Scientist in developing work plans and schedules.
  • Collaborates with the site Superintendent to execute approved work plans.
  • Serves as the field environmental scientist in data collection, site investigation, evaluation of data collected, and remediation activities to support project objectives.
  • Must take detailed field notes.
  • Conducts site reconnaissance, including sampling activities.
  • Conduct Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments.
  • Review and prepare technical reports and proposals and recommends revisions or changes in approach, scope, or format.
  • Participates in the development of scope of work, budget, and proposals.
  • Willingness to perform other duties to ensure success of the project.
  • Travel to Unalaska, AK for 2-6 weeks at a time during field season, working approximately 72 hours per week.

 

Required Skills:

  • Must have experience in environmental fieldwork such as contaminated soil sampling and removal, monitoring well installation and sampling, and Phase I/II site investigations.
  • Must be able to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Must have experience working around heavy equipment.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate in verbal and written communications.
  • Must have experience working in remote Alaska.
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft office products.
  • Must be highly organized.
  • Must be self-motivated.
  • Must be able to exercise effective time management.


 

Requirements: 

  • BS in a science or engineering field
  • Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) Qualified Sampler

 


Preferred (but not required):

  • HAZWOPER 40 Hour
  • OSHA-30 Hour
  • OSHA-10 Hour
  • EM385-1-1
  • Knowledge of cleanup and assessment grants such as ANCSA and Brownfields.
  • Experience working with Alaska Native Corporations.
  • Knowledge of RCRA, CERCLA, OSHA, EPA, USACE, and other federal agencies.
  • Experience with statistical analysis.
  • Experience sampling soil, groundwater, and other media at contaminated sites.
  • Experience conducting Hazardous Building Materials Survey and Assessments.
  • Working knowledge of mapping grade GPS devises.
  • Hazardous materials shipping certification, e.g. IATA
  • AHERA Building Inspector Initial certification.
  • Experience working with or for 8(a) small disadvantaged businesses.



Position requirements:

  • Pre-employment drug & alcohol screening and/or random drug screen.
  • Pre-employment criminal background history check.
  • Must have or be willing to obtain 40-Hour HAZWOPER certification.
  • HAZWOPER physical and respirator fit test.


Physical Demands:

Works inside and outside. Ability to bend, reach, lift and carry up to 25 lbs.  Can work effectively and safely in inclement weather to include high winds, rain, and snow. Most of the field work will occur between April – November. May require travel in helicopter, aircraft, ATVs, and watercraft for short periods of time.
