Role Description

The Special Effects Technician must be creative and logical with the ability to look ahead, make a plan that starts at concept and takes the plan thru to completion of the first look. Repeat the planning and visualization as the idea is revised and evolves. 

Responsibilities:
  • Understanding of building techniques used in the film industry such as scenery, prop making and special effects
  • Able to weld, fabricate and assemble framework, armatures and devices needed for mock up requirements
  • Understand what is needed to control valves, actuators and timers as part of a mock up build
  • Animate the movement of devices using linkages, pneumatics, hydraulics and electronic actuators
  • Basic electrical practices abilities
  • Ability to design structures that are a daily part of mock-up (basins to hold water, textured walls, weirs etc.)
  • Lead a team of peers, give a clear view of the plan and timeframe and execute the plan
  • Look at a problem or issue and calmly and logically troubleshoot to resolve the problem


Key Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience taking a design concept all the way to full completion and delivery
  • Design intelligence: creative problem solving, diligence in finding the best solution for each design challenge, excellent spatial reasoning skills, attention to detail
  • Fundamentals of engineering: strength of materials, material science, statics, heat transfer
  • Broad range of materials and processes: metals, wood, foam, PVC, plastics and composites
  • Flexible design skills: tolerance analysis, design for assembly/manufacturability, cross functional electro-mechanical integration, simple fixture design, developing initial product layouts, and mechanism design
  • Excellent communication skills: both written and verbal communication, ability to communicate design ideas clearly, lead and contribute to brainstorms
