Assistant Controller

Background

The Athletic Club of Columbus (ACC) in Columbus, Ohio, is an icon. Established in 1912 by a group of business professionals interested in promoting social and athletic endeavors, the ACC remains an integral part of the Columbus business and political communities. The Club is rich in history and tradition and operates with an eye toward the future and an openness to change, diversity, inclusion, and belonging. The ACC is a haven for 1,500 members and their families.

Position Summary

We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Assistant Controller to join our team at The Athletic Club of Columbus. As an integral part of our finance department, the Assistant Controller will support the Controller in overseeing the financial operation and ensuring the accuracy of financial reporting.

Primary Responsibilities

General Ledger and Month-End Close:

  • Maintain the integrity of the general ledger and chart of accounts.
  • Assist in month-end and year-end closing procedures.
  • Prepare journal entries and account reconciliations as needed.

Accounts Payable and Receivable:

  • Manage accounts payable functions, including invoice processing and vendor payments.
  • Manage accounts receivable and ensure timely collections; communicate with members regarding monthly statement charges.
  • Post monthly member charges, i.e. dues billing, ticket sales, etc.
  • Reconcile member accounts and resolve any discrepancies.

Payroll Administration:

  • Assist with payroll processing and ensure accurate employee compensation, including tip pools and other payroll related items.
  • Review payroll reports for completeness and accuracy.
  • Address payroll-related staff inquiries and issues promptly.

Financial Reporting and Analysis:

  • Assist in preparing monthly and annual financial statements.
  • Attend monthly Finance Committee meetings.
  • Conduct variance analysis and provide insights to the Controller and management.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting principles and club policies.

Budgeting and Forecasting:

  • Support the annual budgeting process, including revenue projections and expense forecasting.
  • Monitor budget-to-actual performance and analyze discrepancies.
  • Collaborate with department heads to develop accurate budget projections.
  • Maintain accurate budgets for Clubs within the Club.

Financial Controls and Audit Support:

  • Maintain financial controls to safeguard club assets.
  • Assist with audits and provide necessary documentation and explanations.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and internal policies.
  • Contribute to the enhancement of financial systems and processes.
  • Identify opportunities for efficiency gains and cost savings.
  • Participate in special projects and initiatives as assigned by the Controller.

Discretion in handling confidential information.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
  • Proven experience (1-3 years) in accounting or finance roles, preferably in hospitality or private club industry.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting practices.
  • Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
  • Excellent analytical skills with a keen attention to detail.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and work independently as well as part of a team.

Salary & Schedule

Base compensation starts at $70,000 annually plus bonus potential. FSLA Status: Exempt. Schedule Expectations: Monday through Friday, full time.
