Job DescriptionJob DescriptionDescriptionGovernment Affairs professional with three to five years of experience coordinating and implementing advocacy strategies focused on state and local policymakers, building and implementing advocacy campaigns, developing relationships with elected officials, managing coalition engagement, and executing communications strategies for advancing advocacy priorities. Reports to Director, Policy, Advocacy & Government Relations.

MISSION: To help coordinate JED's efforts to research, synthesize, identify and implement actions to strengthen the youth mental health and suicide prevention field through advocacy and government relations activities.
Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in developing strategies and executing an impactful and effective advocacy strategy (in collaboration with the Director of Government Affairs and Advocacy and other staff).  Our advocacy priorities can be found here.
  • In support of that strategy, assist in efforts to advocate for state and federal policies and legislation that strengthen schools-based mental health and suicide prevention approaches, including:
    • Ensuring progress with our current priority federal bills, including for high school - Youth Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Act - and higher ed - The Enhancing Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Through Campus Planning Act
  • Continually monitoring and, as appropriate, reacting to state and federal mental health policies and developments
  • Assist in identifying and managing relationships with elected officials, as needed, to achieve JED’s advocacy priorities and goals.
  • Work with the communications team to communicate advocacy messages to various audiences.
  • Support the Director in managing student internship programs in mental health policy, ensuring meaningful learning experiences. Coordinate recruitment, mentorship, and professional growth opportunities for interns, aligning the program with the organization’s objectives.
  • Ensures all government affairs work incorporates principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion and considers diverse populations
  • Additional policy-related duties as assigned.


Skills Knowledge and Expertise
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience.
  • 3-5+ years of relevant experience in mental health, health, or disability policy, ideally including work within state or federal legislative or executive branch offices, government affairs, or nonprofit policy and advocacy organizations.
  • Exceptional persuasive writing ability, strong public speaking and communication skills.
  • Alignment with JED’s guiding principles and mission.

Travel and Work Environment:

  • Must be able to be in DC for weekly in-person meetings, Hill days, Conferences, etc.
  • Travel ~30%

Pay Ranges / Location / Travel InformationPay Ranges:
The range listed on this job posting is based on JED's compensation posting ranges. Salaries may be higher or lower depending on experience and geographic location.

Location/Travel Information:
Please note that this position is HYBRID, and the remainder will be work-from-home. This role will require retreat/business meetings at JED’s central office in NYC or other locations as designated by JED leadership. Additional travel may be required.
