What We Need

The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is a leading voice for U.S. protected waters, is seeking a part-time 12-month term Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center Educator, a position responsible for supporting the day-to-day operations of the Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center (FKEDC),

The person in this role will be an employee of the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, but the position will be funded through a Cooperative Agreement with NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries. This position will be embedded with the staff at the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary in Key West, FL.

What You’ll Do

  • Support day-to-day center operations including opening and closing duties such as turning on/off of exhibits and educational movie theater
  • Support volunteers in their given duties
  • Greet visitors and give them a brief orientation of the EDC. 
  • Provide accessible information about Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS), the Florida Keys ecosystem and culture, and EDC partners. 
  • Answer questions in person and by telephone. 
  • Track daily visitor numbers and gather visitor data as needed. 
  • Lead guided tours of the exhibit hall.
  • Explain the use of interactive displays and educational film. 
  • Troubleshoot malfunctioning equipment, exhibits, or any other aspect of the EDC facility.
  • May assist with meetings or events held at the Center, as organized by FKNMS or other partners, including setup, cleanup, and carrying lightweight items. 
  • Assist with outreach programming including monthly Saturday children’s programs that engage families in learning about the sanctuary and our partners.
  • Assist in the development and execution of environmental field trip programs about Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary for primary school-age children.
  • Conduct product and program evaluation for the Eco-Discovery center to maximize program impact. 
  • Participate in professional development and training modules as set out by FKNMS leadership.
  • Act as Sanctuary Point of Contact at the Eco-Discovery Center in the absence of the EDC Manger. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Eco-Discovery Center Manager.

  • Ability to work from seated, standing, or walking positions.
  • Ability to lift and arrange folding tables and chairs; wipe off tables, counters, and displays; and use craft-making tools and materials; ability to stand, bend, carry, and lift.
  • Must clear background check (to be completed upon offer/acceptance of employment)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BA Degree in Education, Museum Studies, Environmental Studies or related field.
  • One year of experience supporting a visitor center or educational program with demonstrated expertise in dealing with the general public.
