Job Overview

This role is essential in supporting the Gengras Center by designing and executing educational strategies and activities that demonstrate a deep understanding of students' cognitive, physical, and social development. The instructor must possess a solid foundation in teaching methodologies and competencies, with proficiency in literacy, numeracy, and technology use, including assistive devices that facilitate student learning and engagement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Goal-Oriented Teaching: Exhibit expertise in various areas, including:
  • Understanding developmental disabilities and their impact on learning and classroom dynamics.
  • Employing effective strategies for enhancing student learning and managing behavior.
  • Utilizing formal and informal assessment tools in compliance with legal guidelines.
  • Creating and implementing Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
  • Leading and mentoring teaching assistants while resolving conflicts effectively.
  • Collecting and analyzing data to tailor educational programs for students.
  • Conducting Functional Behavioral Assessments and developing Behavior Intervention Plans.
  • Demonstrating knowledge of state educational standards.
  • Facilitating reading and writing as interactive processes.
  • Understanding mathematical concepts and their application.
  • Integrating life skills education relevant to independent living and employment.
  • Designing instructional activities that reflect an understanding of students' developmental needs.
  • Creating a classroom atmosphere that promotes positive behavior and maximizes learning time.
  • Implementing de-escalation techniques during crises to ensure safety.
  • Collaborating with the transdisciplinary team to integrate functional and academic skills across the curriculum.
  • Engaging with community projects that enhance educational experiences.
  • Maintaining effective communication with all stakeholders.
  • Providing lesson plans and progress updates to the administration as required.

Program Management:

  • Establishing and upholding operational policies and procedures.
  • Assisting in the identification and achievement of program objectives.
  • Coordinating the design and implementation of the Special Education program, including lesson planning.
  • Delivering instruction that aligns with IEP goals and promotes student independence.
  • Monitoring student performance and maintaining progress data.
  • Ensuring a safe and healthy learning environment.
  • Participating in collaborative meetings to enhance instructional strategies.
  • Assuming responsibilities for state assessments as designated.
  • Facilitating effective staff utilization.

Collaboration and Training:

  • Modeling effective strategies for paraprofessionals to support student engagement.
  • Providing feedback on paraprofessional performance.
  • Fostering partnerships with the University of Saint Joseph for student observations and practicum supervision.
  • Utilizing technology for instructional purposes and productivity.
  • Delivering in-person and online instruction as necessary.
  • Professional Development:
  • Engaging in continuous professional growth through workshops and training sessions.
  • Completing all mandated training in a timely manner.

Qualifications:

  • Certification in Special Education; a Master's Degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of two years of experience working with students with special needs.
  • Proficient knowledge and experience in Special Education methodologies.
  • Strong skills in literacy, numeracy, and technology.
