The Director, US policy will support the US commercial business with a focus on the Oncology and Biopharmaceuticals therapeutic areas, reporting to the Head of State and Federal Market Access & TA Policy. This position will play a critical role in advancing AstraZeneca’s US policy priorities and executing strategic alignment and pull-through of proactive and reactive policy shaping opportunities including in the areas of pricing, reimbursement, access, and affordability at the State and Federal levels.
You will be responsible for:
- Develop and execute public policy positions and strategies to support the goals of the US business as a whole, Therapeutic Area priorities, and US Corporate Affairs
- Collaborate closely with members of the US & Global Government Affairs teams on government affairs priorities
- Lead in developing and executing internal and external programs to drive awareness around US public policy issues serving as subject matter expert to colleagues in US Market Access, US Commercial and US Legal business units on assigned issues, in alignment with Federal and State government affairs and policy leadership.
- Work with US Corporate Affairs, including Alliance Development colleagues to support relationships with key patient groups, medical societies, and other stakeholders on policy issues
- Participate in trade association work groups to represent the company’s interests
- Demonstrate and maintain strong working relationships with key external stakeholders (including but not limited to: HHS (especially CMS), the Administration, trade associations, think tanks, and third party allies)
- Serve as a subject matter expert before policymakers at the State and Federal levels.
- Clearly and impactfully communicate AstraZeneca positions on assigned issues to federal agencies and other external stakeholders
You will need to have:
- Bachelor’s Degree is required
- 7+ years of demonstrated success working in public policy arena and/or U.S. government/ or related background.
- Expert knowledge of the transforming U.S. health system – finance and payment structures, benefit design, care delivery, , etc.
- Demonstrated leadership ability to identify and focus on strategic priorities.
- Ability to bring together different internal partners, and move an agenda forward to resolution and action.
- Consistent record in identifying policy trends affecting public health and advancing policy solutions.
- Strong oral and written communication skills to influence and effectively lead internal and external audiences to desired outcomes.
- Experience working with consultants to manage research projects and regulatory comment letters
- Ability to manage numerous, competing priorities under pressure while effectively collaborating with internal partners
- Sound business judgment and integrity and an ability to build credible, effective working relationships both internally and externally
- The duties of this role are generally conducted in an office environment. As is typical of an office-based role, employees must be able, with or without an accommodation to: use a computer; engage in communications via phone, video, and electronic messaging; engage in problem solving and non-linear thought, analysis, and dialogue; collaborate with others; maintain general availability during standard business hours.
We would prefer for you to have:
- Experience working in a highly matrixed organization
- Experience in the biopharmaceutical industry
- Experience working on Capitol Hill, at a Federal agency or at The White House; or experience working for a policy organization
- Experience in Medicaid, 340B, and prescription drug review board policy especially desirable.
