General Description and Classification Standards

The Atlanta Department of Transportation (ATLDOT) was created to improve how Atlanta manages transportation and its right of way. One of the main goals of the department and the city’s Strategic Transportation Plan is to improve safety on the city’s streets and to improve the experience of pedestrians, transit riders, cyclists, and scooter riders. The Transportation Engineering Intern will support ATLDOT’s Office of Engineering three primary sections: Signs, Markings and Studies, Multimodal Design, and Plan Review and Support Services. The intern may work on projects prioritized via the Moving Atlanta Forward infrastructure package, as well as the Vision Zero and Safe Routes to School programs. This may include supporting data collection, traffic studies, concept, preliminary, or final design, cost estimates and quantity calculation, plan review, field visits, meeting documentation, and support efforts for transportation projects from conception to implementation. This internship opportunity is suited to current undergraduate, graduate students, or new graduates looking to start a career in transportation engineering, traffic engineering, road safety, multimodal urban infrastructure, and sustainable and active transportation.

Supervision Received

This position will receive direct supervision from one or more experienced engineers within ATLDOT’s Office of Engineering. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Demonstrated interest in Transportation Engineering, or related field and have a strong desire to advance skills related to ATLDOT work and projects
  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to engineering and non-engineering audiences
  • Assists with development of engineering studies and plans– traffic control evaluations, signal and stop control warrant studies, capacity and safety analyses, speed limit studies, traffic calming evaluations, policy studies such as No Turn on Red, and Leading Pedestrian Interval (LPI) evaluations
  • Assists with development of multimodal engineering construction plans – concept schematics and construction plans for traffic signals, bicycle lanes, curb ramps, sidewalks, pedestrian crossings such as RRFBs and PHBs, roadway signing and marking, with a special emphasis on roadway safety
  • Assists with plan review for land development and right-of-way impact projects to meet the latest City Code, manuals, guides, standards and details, as well as capital infrastructure plan review from ATLDOT Office of Capital Delivery consultants, and intergovernmental agencies such as MARTA, Atlanta BeltLine Inc., PATH Foundation and the Community Improvement Districts (CIDs)
  • Develops digital presentations and communications materials for internal and public-facing use and utilizing a variety of credible data sources
  • Conducts site visits to document existing conditions, review proposed designs, and evaluate constructed designs for adequacy
  • Provides technical input, documents research, studies, and designs, and attends project meetings as part of providing professional support

Preferred Knowledge and Skills

  • Effective verbal and written communications
  • Proficiency Microsoft Office 365 preferred
  • Proficiency in Bentley MicroStation preferred
  • Basic experience in AutoCAD and Esri ArcGIS optional
  • Basic experience in Synchro optional
  • Knowledge of crash reports and analysis
  • Ability to read and synthesize information from transportation plans and studies, as well as construction plans
  • Knowledge of multimodal transportation design principles and policies
