General Description and Classification Standards
We are seeking a Safety and Emergency Preparedness Intern to assist our safety team in maintaining and improving our safety programs, policies, and procedures. The intern will work closely with our safety team to support the development, implementation, and management of safety initiatives to ensure the safety of employees, customers, and the public. This is a great opportunity for individuals interested in gaining hands-on experience in the safety and emergency preparedness field.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Must require the following of all ATLDOT safety protocols.
- Work alongside ATLDOT SSEP team to help project safety efforts.
- Develop original safety training and promotional materials (i.e., toolbox talks, safety bulletins, forms, etc.)
- Assist with the review and development of safety training manual and plans.
- Designs and participates in safety and emergency preparedness promotional events.
- Assist with emergency response planning and drills to ensure the readiness of the organization to respond to emergencies.
- Collaborate with internal departments and external organizations to promote safety culture and best practices.
- Regularly review and analyze safety data for significant trends and support efforts in communicating those trends and lessons learned with the department.

- Participates in internal and external planning and training meetings.
- Support department initiatives as directed by the supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS
Qualifications
- Students must be college or graduate-level students enrolled at an accredited school (majoring in Risk Management, Occupational Safety, Homeland Security, Communications, or equivalent)
- Must have PC experience in Windows environments, working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, e-mail, Web-enabled applications, and database software.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, written, and verbal skills.
- Detail-oriented, effective organization and time management skills
- Understanding of customer service skills
- Ability to work well as part of a team.
- Ability to use time productively, maximize efficiency, and meet challenging work goals.
- Excellent problem-solving ability
- Attention to detail while completing multiple or repetitive tasks with a high sense of urgency.
- Take on additional responsibilities as needed while managing your priorities.
- Graphic design
- Work requires local travel to ATLDOT facilities.
- May be required to work on holidays and weekends.
