Private Equity Deal Origination Associate

New York


Reporting to the Founder of this New York based private equity firm that acquires and invests in middle-market businesses headquartered in the U.S. The fund will focus on originating deals across a wide variety of industries and primarily focuses on growing companies with a history of positive operating cash flows and within opportunities in industries experiencing significant growth.


Job Description:

The Business Development Associate is primarily responsible for

  • Assisting in the execution of the origination strategy to maximize deal flow for the investment team
  • Supporting relationships with primary and secondary investment banks as well as buy-side advisors and other potential deal sources
  • Supporting the design and execution of critical business development projects including work on reporting, DealCloud CRM, proprietary deal flow generation, marketing initiatives and investment banking organization/ tiering
  • Helping maintain DealCloud and analyzing business development statistics
  • Supporting NDA negotiation and execution and
  • Attending business development conferences to generate deal flow


Job Responsibilities:

Deal Source Cultivation:

  • Learn and be able to articulate the fund's investment criteria, portfolio description and add- on acquisition goals to the investment banking community, buy-side advisors and other deal sources including business brokers, corporate development executives and business owners.
  • Assist in organizing relationships with deal sources and systematically covering secondary investment banks through phone calls and in-person meetings.
  • Help set up and participate in trips and conferences to meet deal sources.
  • Over time, expected to establish personal relationships with sources of deal flow.


DealCloud Support and Analysis:

  • Responsible for helping maintain and improve the fund's CRM (DealCloud).
  • Help monitor deal flow goals in conjunction with the fund's strategic plan.
  • Responsible for consistent data entry into the CRM, recording interactions with deal sources and supporting both strategic projects and marketing initiatives.


Reporting and Process Improvement:

  • Take an active part in managing, maintaining and refining the fund'sreporting, opportunity tracking and business development planning processes. This includes maintaining the accuracy of investment bank firm org charts and tiering classifications for institutional and individual deal sources.
  • Expected to not only workon maintaining existing processes, but also to take an active role in improving them.


Industry Conferences and Business Development Trips:

  • In coordination with the head of business development and the VP of business development, will go on city visits to meet deal sources and attend appropriate industry/ deal flow conferences that enhance the fund profile and deal flow.
  • Attend most of these events with other members of the BD or investment teams with solo travel increasing over time.


Alternative Sources of Deal Flow:

  • Responsible for supporting the strategy to solicit deal flow from non-traditional sources including but not limited to: Corporate Business Development professionals, Family owned businesses, Lawyers, Accountants and proprietary sources. This will include calls and in-person meetings with these deal flow sources.



  • Outbound Communication: Coordinate with the BD team and Partners to support a regular cadence for outbound electronic communication. These communications will highlight the fund investment criteria, relevant add-on searches, recent transaction purchases or divestitures and overall brand enhancement.


  • Skills/Qualifications:
  • 1 to 4 years of experience in sales or business development, partnerships, client relationship management, investment banking, financial services sales, expert networking or PE deal sourcing
  • Familiarity with the key principles of private equity and/or investment banking
  • Highly organized and methodical approach with a focus on process adherence/process improvement.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate a clear message
  • Excellent communicator, outgoing and extraverted personality.
  • Comfortable in social settings, has an ability to initiate and lead
  • conversations
