Medication Technician

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Looking for a Medication Technician to assist in monitoring and ensuring clients take prescribed psychotropic medications. The Medication Technician will also be responsible for overseeing personal care, medications, treatment, and other nursing procedures for selected clients as authorized by our policy. This role involves working with a program that provides court and parole mandated treatment and supervision to individuals transitioning from the Department of State Hospitals in a 90-day forensic unlocked residential setting.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Monitor and ensure clients take prescribed psychotropic medications and track administration in the electronic system.
  • Check in new medication and reconcile it with the physicians’ orders.
  • Properly dispose of discontinued medication.
  • Distribute PRN medications as necessary.
  • Order, receive, and stock medication room supplies.
  • Assist in auditing medication to ensure accuracy.
  • Collect data on medication orders and deliveries.
  • Pull reports to track medication administration and alert the Medical Services Manager of any errors or discrepancies.
  • Maintain an orderly and efficient medication room with medications stored according to all safety standards.
  • Assist in situational crisis intervention as needed.
  • Observe and report client behavior and activities, noting changes in functioning.
  • Participate in team meetings, in-service training, and other scheduled meetings.
  • Assist the treatment team in arranging emergency transportation for psychiatric and medical emergencies.
  • Report safety hazards, maintenance, and housekeeping requirements to the administrative staff.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all client data.
  • Knowledge of facility emergency codes and response procedures.
  • Maintain an objective, professional relationship with clients at all times.
  • Responsible for policy, procedure, and safety suggestions to the administrative staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prior paraprofessional counseling or psychiatric nursing experience required.
  • Experience with mentally ill populations.
  • Knowledge of behavioral interventions.
  • Academic training in Behavioral Sciences.
  • Experience with mentally ill and/or forensic populations.
  • Spanish Bilingual highly preferred
  • Note: If indicated certifications/licenses are lacking, they must be obtained within 180 days of hire.

EDUCATION & CERTIFICATES

  • Nursing, Pharmacy, Certified Nursing Assistant, or Medical Assistant student with medication training.
  • Desired Education: Associate’s degree (AA) in nursing or BA/BS in psychology, social work, or a related field. Pharmacy Tech Certification, Medical Assistant Certification, or Nursing training with a collegiate degree (AA).

REQUIREMENTS

  • Must pass Department of Justice (DOJ), Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), and Community Care Licensing (CCL) background clearances.
  • Valid California Driver’s license.
  • TB clearance.
  • Driving record acceptable for coverage by our insurance carrier.
  • Fire and Safety Training*.
  • First Aid Training Certification*.
  • CPR Certification*.
  • Crisis Prevention Institute Training (CPI)**.

Note: If indicated certifications/licenses are lacking, they must be obtained within 180 days of hire.

*Training needs to be completed within 30 days from the date of hire on a designated date provided by onboarding. Staff need to be certified at the commensurate level for their role to perform their job duties (staff will be taken off the schedule if certification is not achieved).
