VP of Data Science

Vice President of Data Science – Biotech
Panda Intelligence is pleased to be representing a stealth mode AI drug discovery firm, incubated by one of the most renowned Biotech accelerators in the US and set to become one of the leading AI-driven players in precision medicine. The co-founders are currently on the lookout for a VP of Data Science (with potential for the position to be moved to C-suite level, along with co-founder status) with extensive experience working with genomics data and a proven track record on building high-performing data-driven teams in a start-up environment. This role is crucial for shaping and overseeing all aspects of data science, computational biology, and AI/ML integration to accelerate the design and development of the company’s novel platform.
Key Responsibilities:
- Data Strategy Development: Define and implement a comprehensive data science strategy aligned with the company's R&D objectives, ensuring data science and AI/ML methodologies accelerate target discovery, drug development, and biomarker identification.
- Interdisciplinary Research: Drive interdisciplinary research grounded in computational biology, focusing on target identification.
- AI/ML Integration: Provide strategic guidance on integrating AI/ML into research efforts, working closely with internal and external partners, and leading cross-functional collaborations aimed at advancing the company's data science capabilities.
- Team Leadership: Build and manage a high-performing team of data science experts, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning, and empowering them to contribute to drug discovery and development.
- Mentorship & Collaboration: Act as a mentor to Data Science and AI/ML experts, fostering growth and collaboration within the team, and contribute to strategic decision-making for R&D programs.
- Strategic Partnerships: Identify, recommend, and evaluate opportunities for strategic AI collaborations, leading internal and external cross-functional collaborations to drive the company's data science and AI/ML strategy.
Qualifications:
- Education: PhD, MD, or equivalent in data science, computational biology, bioinformatics, computer science, or a related field.
- Experience: Proven people management experience with a strong track record of building and leading high-performing data science teams specifically within drug discovery.
- Technical Expertise: Deep expertise in data science, computational biology, and AI/ML applications in early-stage biology, drug discovery, and translational research. Extensive experience working with genomics data is essential.
- Collaboration & Leadership: Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and effectively manage small teams and manage internal and external collaborations.
- Industry Knowledge: A recognized leader in the field, with a deep understanding of external trends and the ability to apply advanced analytics and AI/ML to complex biological and clinical datasets.
- Communication: Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills, with the ability to articulate complex data science concepts to diverse audiences.
- Problem Solving: Strong strategic thinking skills and the ability to execute and prioritize effectively in a complex, matrixed environment.
Position: Vice President of Data Science
Location: On-site minimum of 3 days per week in Cambridge, Massachusetts (however fully remote working is possible long-term)
Travel: Domestic and international travel up to 15%
