Overview:

The Assistant Audio Engineer is a key player in the technical execution of live performances, ensuring seamless audio and stage operations. This role involves managing wireless microphone systems, overseeing backstage communication packs, running deck tracks, and collaborating with the A1, deck crew, and production staff to deliver high-quality audio and stage transitions.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Wireless Microphone Management: Responsible for the setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting of all wireless microphones, ensuring performers are properly equipped and audio quality is consistent throughout the performance.
  • Pre-Show Sound Checks: Assist the Lead Audio Engineer (A1) in conducting thorough sound checks, testing all microphones, monitors, and related audio equipment to ensure optimal performance.
  • Live Show Audio Support: Actively monitor and resolve audio issues during live performances, including signal drops, interference, or equipment malfunctions, to maintain consistent sound quality.
  • Deck Track Operations: Manage a designated deck track, which involves assisting with set changes, props, and coordinating backstage movements in sync with cues to ensure smooth transitions.
  • Crew Communication System Management: Oversee the distribution, setup, and operation of crew communication packs, ensuring reliable communication between all team members. Conduct routine maintenance and troubleshooting to avoid technical issues.
  • Backstage Coordination: Maintain clear and effective communication with the A1, deck crew, and production team to coordinate stage transitions and resolve any technical or stage-related issues during the performance.
  • Equipment Setup and Breakdown: Assist with the setup and teardown of all audio equipment, including microphones, monitors, and other sound systems, ensuring proper storage and maintenance post-show.
  • Battery Management: Monitor and manage battery levels for wireless microphones and communication packs, ensuring fresh batteries are installed before each performance to prevent mid-show failures.
  • Rehearsals: Attend all rehearsals to familiarize yourself with the show’s audio and stage requirements, practicing audio management and deck track operations to ensure flawless live execution.
  • Technical Maintenance and Troubleshooting: Perform regular maintenance on all audio equipment and communication systems, quickly resolving any technical issues that arise during setup, rehearsals, or performances.
  • Safety Compliance: Adhere to all safety regulations when handling and operating audio equipment, communication systems, and backstage elements. Ensure a safe environment for performers and crew members.


Qualifications:

  • Proven experience as an Assistant Audio Engineer (A2), audio technician, or similar role in live entertainment.
  • Expertise in managing wireless microphone systems and live sound mixing.
  • Strong knowledge of backstage operations, including stagehand duties like set changes and prop management.
  • Familiarity with crew communication systems and their usage in a live performance setting.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and respond quickly to technical and stage-related issues under pressure.
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills, with the ability to take direction and work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Physical capability to lift, push, and transport audio and stage equipment; ability to work in confined or elevated spaces.
  • OSHA 10 certification required; First Aid certification is a plus.
