Research Associate, Food Science

one.bio is a fast-paced, biotechnology spinout from UC Davis creating ingredients for food and biopharmaceutical applications. We use proprietary technology to create novel oligosaccharides from natural products, with a focus on producing ingredients that beneficially modulate the microbiome and immune function.

Overview:

We are seeking a motivated Food Science Research Associate to join our rapidly growing company. This position will report to the Head of Analytics and will be responsible for operationalizing and employing a variety of techniques for the chemical analysis of various food specifications. Other responsibilities may include data analysis, and general troubleshooting to contribute to bench-top R&D and pilot plant efforts.

The candidate will be required to work both independently, but also with internal collaborators. Previous experience with carbohydrates is desired; however, successful candidates can have experience working with proteins or other biomolecules. The analytical team serves as the link between the different arms of our discovery and production pipeline. Exceptional candidates exhibit strong work ethics and creative problem-solving.

Summary of Key Responsibilities:

·      Coordinate and perform chemical analysis of R&D bench scale and pilot plant products according to standard protocols.

·      Research and test new lab techniques and procedures as needed.

·      Interpret and evaluate analytical results.

·      Determine reasons for problems and recommend corrective actions.

·      Diagnose, troubleshoot, and coordinate maintenance and repair of a variety of instrumentation.

·      Maintain inventory and order supplies; research and recommend new equipment as required.

·      Authoring technical reports, SOPs, and maintaining clear and concise laboratory notebooks.

·      Conducting literature reviews on topics of interest.

·      Collaboratively work within and across groups to contribute to highly cross-functional team efforts

·      Promote a positive and inclusive workplace culture


Qualifications:

·      Bachelor’s degree in food science, chemistry or biochemistry and at least 1 year of laboratory experience is preferred.

·      Experience working with biological molecules (lipids, proteins, metabolites), carbohydrates, glycoproteins, human milk oligosaccharides is preferred.

·      Expertise in operation and maintenance in various lab instrumentation including spectrophotometer is preferred.

·      Demonstrated experience in rapid and high-throughput analytical techniques and data analysis is preferred.

·      Ability to follow SOPs and safety protocols while working in a clean and organized matter.

·      Capable of efficiently communicating scientific results through verbal and oral platforms.

·      A collaborative approach and strong critical thinking capabilities.

·      Excellent attention to detail with proactive problem-solving skills

·      Effective planning, organization, and communication skills

·      Effective written and verbal communication skills even in a fast-paced environment
