What You'll Do:

  • Lead the Team: You'll supervise our engineering staff, guiding them through daily operations, maintenance, and repairs.
  • Plan and Organize: Using our maintenance management application NSE (or any other provided), you'll develop and maintain a detailed plan for operation, maintenance, and repair. You'll also adjust based on emergent priorities.
  • Prepare and Repair: Knowledgeable about shipboard equipment and systems, including steam and diesel propulsion, electric power systems, automation, air conditioning, refrigeration, water makers, oily water separators, and more.
  • Inspections and Compliance: Ensure compliance with USCG regulations and conduct inspections to maintain safe vessel operations. Seek guidance when needed.
  • Collaborate: Regularly review and discuss the maintenance plan with the Chief Engineer to ensure everything is on track.
  • Mentor Students: Help supervise and mentor engine license option students on the Training Ship, ensuring this doesn't interfere with your main responsibilities.
  • Participate in Cruises and Shipyard Activities: Join training cruises and shipyard availability activities, preparing the vessel for all drydockings and inspections.


What You Need to Know:

  • Salary: Your compensation will match your experience.
  • Physical Requirements: You'll need to maintain a USCG/STCW Medical Certificate.
  • Availability: Be ready to be on board during training cruises, shipyard periods, or whenever the ship is away from port.
  • Essential Staff: This role is crucial under our client's Emergency Operations Procedures.
  • Testing: Pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing are required by USCG and DOT regulations.
  • Work Hours: While this position is exempt from overtime, you may need to work more than 40 hours a week, but not exceeding regulatory limits.
  • Participation: You're expected to be involved in events and teams that influence federal maritime training and education policy.


Required Education and Experience:

  • Education: A Bachelor's degree in Maritime Engineering or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Experience: At least three years as a 1st Assistant Engineer, including two years on a steam vessel of unlimited horsepower and one year on a diesel vessel of unlimited horsepower.


Required Licenses and Certifications:

  • USCG License as 1st Assistant Engineer of Steam Vessels of Unlimited Horsepower and Motor Vessels of Unlimited Horsepower.
  • STCW and USCG Medical Certificate.
  • Universal Refrigeration Technician Certification.


A USCG Endorsement as Electro Technical Officer is highly preferred.
