About the Position

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced research engineer with a strong background in data science to join our Electric Power Systems Research group as a Postdoctoral Appointee. The successful candidate will be responsible for making technical contributions and leading projects in the areas of wildfire research, machine learning, geospatial analytics, and electric power systems. The position will involve applying data science and geospatial techniques to create wildfire and power systems tools for electric utilities and electric grid decision makers.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:
  • Demonstrating technical knowledge with a focus on data science applied to wildfire and/or power systems research challenges.
  • Demonstrating creativity and ingenuity in providing software solutions and analytical solutions.
  • Working with colleagues and external collaborators to develop innovative solutions to emerging challenges facing the power industry.
  • Publishing research outcomes in peer-reviewed journals, conferences, etc.
  • Presenting research findings to sponsors and externally to professional communities, e.g., IEEE, CIGRE, industry workshops, etc.

Qualifications

We require a Ph.D. in a science, engineering, or math discipline, experience with data science applications, and the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance. We also desire strong programming ability and analytical skills, including excellence with Python, experience processing and analyzing geospatial data and/or power systems data, experience using machine learning, deep learning, and artificial intelligence techniques, technical knowledge in wildfire modeling and/or power system modeling, expertise in data science applications, strong verbal and written communication skills, and self-motivation and ability to work independently with minimal supervision and ability to work in a team environment.

About Our Team

The Electric Power Systems Research Department is focused on novel R&D to enable the modernization of the nation's electric power grid. Our team is highly inter-disciplinary, working closely with many departments across Sandia, while simultaneously working collaboratively with universities, utilities, government agencies, and other national research organizations.
