We have an exciting opportunity for a Director – Clinical Research Core Facilities & Operations based in our Phoenix, AZ location. The Director - Clinical Research Core Facilities & Operations will be responsible for the leadership, development, and management of all functions within Clinical Research Services portfolio working with a multi-disciplined team. You will have hands-on responsibility in building the clinical research services business plan and shaping the direction of the clinical research services to meet the needs of the growing clinical research enterprise.


Essential Duties:


  • Develop a Clinical Research Services business plan and get approval from leadership. Update as necessary.
  • Ensures compliance with internal SOPs and external regulatory standards.
  • Management of others and in building a fast-paced, empowered, dynamic team.
  • Coach, guide and review staff and their performance
  • Foster cross-functional collaboration, working seamlessly with internal teams to translate into tangible support and revenue generating activities.
  • Engage key external stakeholders to support the strategic growth/direction of clinical research.
  • Develops, analyzes, and reports performance metrics.
  • Sets operational goals, key performance indicators and targets.
  • Manages budget, forecasting, long-range planning.
  • Oversees clinical systems and any integrations with databases for execution of a clinical research project.
  • Responsible for overseeing all clinical research start-up activities through closure such as patient recruitment, screening, consenting, enrollment, retention, obtaining vitals, labs specimens, etc.
  • Ensures adequate staffing and effective scheduling.
  • Performs other related work as required.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


  • Effective leadership and strong management abilities with preferably eight or more years prior experience managing, mentoring, and training clinical research operations staff.
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrates a breadth of diverse leadership experiences and capabilities such as: ability to influence and collaborate with peers, create business impact, etc.
  • Broad knowledge and experience of clinical research and clinical laboratory research
  • Demonstrated experience in budget management methods and techniques.
  • Ability to respond effectively to unexpected events.
  • Demonstrated project management skills – directing, organizing, and prioritizing workload and objectives.


Working Environment:

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
  • Occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 25 pounds.
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • Ability to clearly communicate verbally, read, write, see, and hear to perform essential functions.
  • Drives University vehicle and/or cart to campus site.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND (10) years of related administrative experience which includes eight (8) years of supervisory experience OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.

  • Strong communicator – able to influence, negotiate, set expectations with a diverse team and with others throughout the organization.
  • Demonstrated extensive experience in overseeing the execution of clinical research activities.
  • Demonstrated leadership, independent initiative to interpret and apply applicable regulations, policies, and procedures in a university or an agency funding or conducting research.
  • Demonstrated experience building processes and strategies.
  • Experience in leading teams and creating talent.
