SUMMARY:  Plans, directs, and coordinates activities concerned with design, construction, modification, installation, and maintenance of tooling and related equipment in a plastic extrusion job shop by performing the following duties.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.


Evaluates customer design proposals and specifications to determine the feasibility, of the proposed design for extrusion. May suggest modifications to proposed design or specifications to facilitate extrusion or fabrication of the part, which would be subject to customer approval. Provides estimated tooling costs, equipment costs and time tables for delivery of samples based on mutually agreeable design.


Directs all process design and development activities. Assigns design and development tasks to toolroom personnel. Assesses workload, prioritizes workload and coordinates engineering, tooling department and outside sources to maximize workflow. Analyzes process outputs to determine if the customer’s expectations have been met, these include specifications, fit, form and function. Also determines if internal targets have been met such as rates, profit margins and part weights. May identify areas of concern or improvement in a new process.


Directs or designs downline processes, fixtures, equipment for sizing, clamping, holding, cutting, printing, taping, etc. for primary production, secondary fabrication, or Quality.


Directly responsible for the design and development of processes as required and as stated above.


Identifies opportunities for continual system or process improvements both with-in department or with-in the organization. Works with personnel with-in department or personnel in other departments to implement improvements and then analyze effectiveness of improvement adjusts as necessary to reach desired outcome.


Assist and/or direct certain QA functions such as Advanced Product Quality Planning (Production Part Approval Process). Assist in identifying, conceptualizing, design and implementation of gages or measurement techniques or programs such as SPC.

 

Responsible for recommendation and purchase of machine tools. Participates in evaluating capital equipment expenditures. Provides technical information, to employees involved, regarding manufacturing techniques, material, and process advantages and limitations which affect plant and equipment engineering planning.


Assists production, maintenance, QA or any other company departments with problem solving of more technically complex problems. Reviews technical literature to keep abreast of technical changes in plastics or plastic equipment and informs other management personnel of developments related to their interests or responsibilities.

The ability to establish and sustain harmonious working relations and to communicate effectively with customers and with office, production, supervisory, and management employees is essential to primary responsibilities for problem solving, safe operations, maintenance of customary tight production schedules, and realizing profit potential. Resolves conflicts in priorities and disseminates information at management level to solve problems. Serves as a role model with staff--gaining cooperation among employees, remaining calm in emergencies, and buffering against daily operational stresses.


 

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE 

Three years related experience and/or training in plastic extrusion; or Associate’s degree (A.A.) in Plastics Technology and five years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Two+ years experience using machine shop tools, equipment, EDM wire machine, experience with programing wire EDM, and precision measuring tools.


LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, supervisors, or other employees. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or board of directors.


MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and fundamentals of algebra, geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to make and read engineering drawings. Knowledge and practical experience of SPC


REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid driver’s license required. Membership in Society of Plastics Engineers desirable.


OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Extensive knowledge of all extrusion production machinery and equipment required. Basic understanding of Personal Computers (PCs) and of software such as standard word processing, database, spreadsheet and/or industry-specific such as CAD/CAM software; minimal typing skill required.

ATTENDANCE

Regular attendance, with rare unscheduled absences and no extended absences beyond approximately three months, is critical to maintenance of efficient operations and meeting due dates.
