SUMMARY:   Programs, Sets-up and operates Wire EDM, manual vertical mill, horizontal surface drill press CNC machining center and CNC as required to machine and fabricate all manner of Plastic Profile and Tubing Extrusion tooling and secondary finishing fixtures and tooling.  Also machines and fabricates machine parts for redesign or replacement.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. 

This list of duties and responsibilities is not all inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities, as management may deem necessary from time to time.

Primary responsibilities include all aspects of running Charmilles wire EDM machine(s) including routine maintenance.   Takes drawings provided by Engineering to develop 2 axis or 4 axis wire paths within MasterCAM.  Then converts the wire paths to an NC code program. Use of vertical mill, CNC machining center or CNC EDM hole burner to drill start holes as required for wire program, at times requires ability to set up sine plate for holes burned through a plate at a compound angle.  Transfers code to EDM machine via USB or machine connection. Fixtures work piece within EDM machine, sets cutting parameters, references work piece with respect to machine axis.  Starts cutting program and adjusts cutting parameters to optimize cutting efficiency.  Responsible to verify finished work piece meets designed specifications via use of (including but not limited to) calipers, micrometers, height gage, Optical Comparitor, pin gages, gage blocks etc.

Performs routine maintenance on the wire EDM machine including but not limited to, replacing filters, performing greasing cycles, replacing Dionizing water bag, etc.  Responsible to troubleshoot, other machine issues and may be required to work with manufacturer’s service technicians to identify the root-cause of machine issues and communicate these issues to management for remedy.

As assigned or as needed machines work pieces based on provided prints, sample parts, worn or broken parts or from a description using the following machines, manual vertical mill, horizontal surface grinder, band saw, drill press, Hurco vertical machining center and Southwestern CNC lathe.  Responsible to select proper cutting tools, set proper speeds, feeds and depth of cuts and determine proper order of operations.  Responsible to work with Engineering to resolve any conflicting or unclear information to assure work pieces are machined correctly.  May be responsible to assemble work pieces to assure proper fit and assembly.

Duties may include polishing of flow surfaces in dies and calibrators with the use of grinding tools and polishing tools.

May be required to devise work piece fixtures to accomplish special machining needs or to make fixturing more efficient for repeat situations.

Confers with engineers, production personnel, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems.

Devises sketch from broken parts or verbal description.  Customizes tools, rigs, etc. from observation or verbal request, to meet needs of specific runs.

Responsible for maintaining a clean work environment.

Maintains inventory of standard tooling blanks, as well as, EDM consumables.

Observes all safety procedures. 

May be assigned to improvement teams within the organization and would be responsible for any assignments as a result of that team.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE 

Journeyman Machinist Certificate with 2 years experience running Charmilles Wire EDM machines with Charmilles Controllers, also 2 years experience with CAD/CAM software.  In lieu of a Journeyman Machinist Certificate would accept 5 years machining experience working as a machinist along with Wire EDM experience listed above.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively communicate complex concepts to individuals and groups at all levels within the organization.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra, trigonometry, and geometry commonly found within a typical shop environment.

 

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply creative solutions to problems in order to continually improve the organization.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision once assigned tasks.  Establish and sustain harmonious working relations and to communicate effectively with customers and fellow employees at all levels is essential to primary responsibilities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects or controls.  The employee is frequently required to sit, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear.  The employee is occasionally required to walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

 

ATTENDANCE

Regular attendance, with rare unscheduled absences, and no extended absences beyond approximately three months, is critical to maintenance of efficient operations and meeting due dates.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts.  The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but occasionally loud.
