The Environmental Health & Safety Specialist is responsible for administering, progressively developing and delivering systems that drive safe operating practices. This role is responsible for cultivating a productive, healthy and accident free workplace by establishing and promoting safety policies and practices. Ensures company compliance with all applicable federal, state and local regulations (OSHA/EPA/KDHE/DOT) as it pertains to employee safety, environmental compliance and proper storage and handling of hazardous materials and waste.

Responsibilities:

  • Develops, reviews and conducts health and safety training, orientation
  • Establishes and reviews the Company’s HSE Record Keeping systems
  • Manages inventory and procures all safety equipment and PPE
  • Respond to environmental incidents, coordinating all abatement efforts through completion
  • Provides resources and information to Operations
  • Reviews, addresses, proposes and/or resolve all health and safety concerns
  • Maintains OSHA logs and Incident Reports and investigates all accidents
  • Maintains and ensures that all DOT testing is conducted in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Ensure that all written programs are updated when there are personnel or physical changes that affect those programs
  • Ensure that first aid and CPR training is provided annually or when personnel changes occur
  • Ensure that facility stays in compliance with all record keeping, reporting and certification requirement of the Air Operation Permit
  • Coordinate all written programs to ensure they are updated when there are personnel, or physical changes that affect those programs and all employees are trained to these changes to include OSHA, EPA, and DOT, regulations and annual training are given to affected employees
  • Ensure that daily, weekly, monthly, semi-annual and annual safety checks and inspections are performed per OSHA requirements
  • Holds a chair on the Safety Committee
  • Teaches various safety classes on a wide variety of topics throughout the company
  • Represents the organization in community or industry safety groups and programs
  • Assist with the development, implementation and maintenance of EHS training programs.
  • Assist with activities pertaining to fire safety including involvement with fire drills; evaluation of life safety compliance; development, implementation and maintenance of emergency action plans, fire prevention plans and emergency response plans
  • .Ensure that Tier II, Sec 312, Form R, Sec 313, Hazardous Waste Generation, Air Emissions, and any future Government mandated reports are filed in a timely manner.
  • Coordinates all hazardous waste activities to include: storage containers, weekly hazardous waste container inspections, disposal of hazardous waste in accordance with all local, State and Federal Rules and regulations, hazardous waste handling training and record retention.
  • Updates the Hazardous Waste Contingency Plan and emergency phone list when information changes.
  • Maintain constant awareness of changing regulations, ensuring the company’s Environment, Health and Safety policies and training are aligned with current laws and industry standards
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those in contact on a day-to-day basis.
  • Act as primary emergency coordinator for facility and maintain Management informed
  • Be compliant with the rules of conduct and attendance per company handbook

Director of Operations

Requirements (education, experience, travel, physical, work environment):

  • Bachelor's degree in industrial hygiene, safety sciences, environmental sciences, engineering or public health or 5 years or more of EHS experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Certification or the ability to achieve the following certifications is preferred: Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and/or Certified Industrial Hygienist-CIH PEC, OSHA 501 and 511, HAZWOPER and HAZOM and CPR and First Aid.
  • Working knowledge of CFR Codes, OSHA regulations, and basic Industrial hygiene techniques and principles

Ability to research, conduct investigations and analyze information.

  • Interpersonal Skills - Focuses on solving conflict; Maintains confidentiality.
  • Good oral and written communication skills- able to demonstrate group presentation skills.
  • Completes administrative tasks correctly and on time; supports organization's goals and values.
  • Displays willingness to make decisions.
  • Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of software programs used in databases, to include but not limited to MS Office, QV21 and Fleetmatics a plus.
  • Understand fundamental use of various pneumatic and power tools. Must be familiar with the operation of various tools- i.e. drill, screw gun, sander, jig saw, etc.

  • Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 40#’s without assistance.
  • Ability to work from various squatting, kneeling or bending positions.
  • Ability to work with arms above head.
  • Ability to work from ladders or scaffolding.
  • Ability to stand or walk within the manufacturing environment for eight hours per day (minus specified breaks).
  • Ability to safely use specified hand, air, power tools, and machinery.
  • Ability to operate and understand the operation of all protective safety equipment in the area.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.
  • Hand-Eye coordination.
  • Required to handle and dispose of hazardous waste.
  • Ability to work in 105-degree heat for excess of eight (8) hours per day.
  • Ability to work in noisy and dusty conditions.
