Responsibilities



Be a part of a large interdisciplinary team that researches the effects of hydropower operations on passage and survival of juvenile salmon and lamprey throughout the Columbia, Snake, Willamette, and other river systems throughout the Pacific Northwest. These studies involve deploying, retrieving, maintaining, and testing acoustic and radio telemetry equipment, tagging or assisting with surgical implantation of transmitters in fish, and transport and release of live tagged fish according to a detailed time schedule. ​Project responsibilities will include fieldwork, data collection, data analysis, and report writing. Seasonal fieldwork may require frequent travel within the region.

​The successful candidate may also assist with laboratory studies handling fish, conducting in-depth necropsies, and maintaining fish populations in aquaculture facilities.​ 


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates must have received a Master’s degree within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university. Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree in fisheries, environmental sciences, or a biology-related field and within the last two years .  ​Knowledge of telemetry study design and array maintenance is desirable. ​Experience with field work.  ​Experience handling and tagging live fish.  Managing large datasets and data analysis (MS Excel, R Programming, SQL, Python, etc.)  Familiarity with mark-recapture study designs and survival estimation, multiple regression modeling, and/or maximum likelihood estimation is desirable.  Boat driving experience is desirable Candidates with several years of boat driving experience on large rivers are strongly encouraged to apply.  Desirable characteristics include attention to detail, the ability to work both independently and as a member of a team, possession of a strong work ethic, and a willingness to work many extra hours when warranted to achieve project goals  Extensive travel may be required of this position.  An ideal candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to data quality and accuracy, strong written and oral communication skills as evidenced by scientific publications and conference presentations and be able to work independently and in a team setting. Additional necessary qualifications include:​Strong written and presentation skills for diverse audiences​Understanding of energy and natural resource issues​Excellent organizational skills
