Richland, United States Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Full time

Responsibilities

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and the Institute for Integrated Catalysis (IIC) represent scientific and engineering leadership in catalysis research for the nation and world, serving a wide variety of federal and commercial clients. The Catalysis Science group, as part of the Physical Sciences Division (PSD), is looking for candidates for a Post-Doctorate position focused on conducting fundamental research in the field of heterogeneous catalysis for hydrocarbon and oxygenate conversion.

The Post-doctorate candidate will join a highly-skilled, multi-investigator team led by Prof. Johannes A. Lercher. The primary focus of the position will involve exploring the molecular-level structural and functional aspects of heterogeneous catalysts. This will be achieved through controlled catalyst synthesis, rigorous kinetic measurement, and the use of spectroscopies such as FTIR and NMR to understand the structure of catalytic materials and surface species. The candidate will also collaborate with staff performing the corresponding computational chemistry. Typical catalytic reactions include acid-catalyzed dehydrations and condensations and metal-catalyzed (de)hydrogenations. Additionally, the candidate will have the opportunity to get involved in the applied research for developing catalysts for the conversion of biomass, waste, and CO2 to renewable fuels and chemicals.

Conduct independent research and work on team assignments Lead manuscript development and maintain a strong overall publication record in the peer-reviewed scientific literature Interact, communicate, and problem solve with a diverse team of research staff within the Catalysis Science Group, Physical Sciences Division, and across PNNL Present research at technical conferences and project/program review meetings Participate in the development of research proposals
