Richland, United States Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Full time

Responsibilities

The GL will create a vision for the future of energy storage research, development, and deployment at PNNL that aligns with PNNL mission and business goals and will be responsible for sustaining and further developing a suite of technical capabilities to achieve that vision. The GL will direct the group’s research operations, including staffing, facilities, and equipment and will be directly responsible for maintaining a safe work environment and for instilling a strong safety culture. As an integral member of the EP&MD leadership team, the GL will work closely with the division director, fellow GLs, sector managers, and senior technical leaders to establish goals, plans, and strategic directions for the EP&MD and to resolve key challenges.

The BMS Group consolidates PNNL’s strengths in chemistry and materials science, synthesis and characterization, modeling and data science, and techno-economic analysis to advance energy storage from fundamental science to deployment. Our staff lead one of the largest electric vehicle battery research programs in the world, the Battery500 Consortium, and the new Cathode-Electrolyte Interphase Consortium. In addition, we work with five other national laboratories in the Rapid Operational Validation Initiative to apply artificial intelligence to validate the performance of grid-scale energy storage.

BMS group staff and labs are located in the new Grid Storage Launchpad facility with extensive capabilities for innovative materials research, advanced prototyping, and testing and validation of next-generation batteries up to 100 kW under realistic grid conditions. The work starts with scientific discovery and delivers enormous impact in the energy storage area. The group has several highly cited researchers and distinguished inventors. Staff work with industry partners to de-risk and deploy energy storage technologies in the real world.

As the BMS Group Leader, you will provide technical leadership and expertise to ongoing research efforts and collaborate with stakeholders to define and shape future research programs that leverage existing strengths and build new capabilities in battery materials and systems. Working with experts across PNNL and in collaboration with our research partners in government, industry, academia, and at other National Laboratories, you will support efforts to build new, high visibility research programs that leverage BMS Group capabilities to meet the technology goals of the Department of Energy and other key stakeholders. As a line manager, you will be responsible for hiring, developing, and retaining a diverse staff of world class experts in energy storage; maintaining the PNNL’s reputation for high quality research and on-time delivery; and sustaining a strong safety culture.

Principal responsibilities include:

Hire, develop, and enable world-class researchers. Assure safe, secure, effective, and compliant operations. Proactively mitigate hazards associated with work conducted by group staff. Cultivate staff success through advancement of a supportive work environment where all staff are valued and respected. Establish a technical vision and direction for the group that includes both short-term financial investments and long-term investments in staff capabilities. Work with division directors, sector managers, and project management office directors to identify future resource requirements. Develop and implement a staffing plan to meet those resource requirements. Market the group capabilities to internal and external stakeholders, and support sector managers in external marketing efforts. Assure group staff contributions are appropriately recognized, publicized, and rewarded.

Provide impactful performance feedback to staff members and support long-term professional development goals.

Positions comprised predominantly of research management responsibilities, with significant span of control and/or delegated authority and responsibility. These positions generally manage multi-disciplinary organizations through staff leaders or subordinate managers. Management decisions impact objectives, goals and long-term success of the organization and Laboratory.
