Nature of Work

This is semiskilled work involving determining the exact location of underground watermains, sewer lines and the like to prevent their damage during construction or maintenance work. Work is performed under the general supervision of a utilities supervisor.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES 
The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

Locates underground utility sewer and water mains and the like using special locator equipment. Reads blueprints or other engineering drawings to assist in locating buried lines; researches maps, prints and other records for locations of buried lines. Maintains records related to the work. Assists other utilities in locating buried lines. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Training and Experience

Minimum Training and Experience

Graduation from high school. --AND--
One (1) year of experience in work related to utility distribution systems. --OR--
Any equivalent combination of training and experience. Necessary Special Requirements
Possession of a valid Michigan driver's license.

Other Necessary Qualifications

Knowledge of:

Practices, equipment and techniques related to locating underground sewer or water lines. Safety standards and precautions pertaining to equipment operation. Ability to:
Use and operate locating equipment in a safe and effective manner. Follow oral and written instructions. Keep records related to the work. Work cooperatively with others.
