Job description

The Department has recently set up the Priority Projects Team (PPT) to tackle urgent and high-profile challenges across the department through short-medium term policy project work. The team will take on strategic, long-term, or cross-cutting issues not addressed through business-as-usual work and be a rapidly deployable resource to deal with emerging political or departmental priorities.

As Programme Manager, you will be responsible for supporting the running of the overall PPT programme, ensuring that the whole team can operate effectively and flexibly whilst delivering to the highest standard.

Your role will include supporting the Head of Programme in developing a pipeline of bids, a quarterly bidding process, prioritisation of projects, project initiation, check-point reviews and project closure, and designing/providing reports accordingly. You will also support the Policy Team by ensuring they have the right tools and knowledge to apply proportionate project management.

You will join a highly collaborative team, with an integral focus on learning and development, supporting each other to achieve and maintain a consistent high level of performance.�

Your key responsibilities will include:

Promoting the team�s programme management function and ensuring good project management practices are followed across the team.Managing the quarterly bidding process and supporting the Head of Programme with ongoing resource prioritisation.Supporting the creation and provision of regular reports to ExCo (and other senior stakeholders) on the PPT operating model as well as on the individual projects, their progress and success.Ensuring that PPT governance processes and project meetings, including the Prioritisation Panel meetings and PPT Board, run smoothly.

Person specification

About you

You will be a proactive and organised individual with experience in project delivery, either from being a project delivery professional with experience of working in a fast-paced policy environment, or a policy specialist with experience in project delivery. In addition, you will either already hold a Project Delivery qualification (such as APM, PMQ or Managing Successful Programmes) or be willing to work towards the qualification once in role.

You will be a motivated and resilient individual who can adapt priorities to suit the changing requirements of the team and wider organisation. You will be confident working independently and comfortable with ambiguity.

You will have excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively engage with stakeholders, building trusted working relationships. You will be an articulate communicator, both verbally and in writing, who can effectively influence staff at all levels.

Additional Information

This role is available to individuals who wish to be spending their office time in London, Leeds or Birmingham, and we would also expect the individual to be willing to occasionally travel to visit alternative DfT offices.

A minimum 60% of your working time should be spent at your principal workplace, although requirements to attend other locations for official business, or carry out detached duty in another DfT workplace, will also count towards this level of attendance.
