Job Overview:

This position works with and evaluates the federal Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) including congregate meals, non-congregate meals, and Summer EBT. It works in expanding access to healthy meals during the summer months. The SFSP specialist oversees the SFSP compliance monitoring process to ensure minimal USDA Management Evaluation findings. The SFSP is a federally-funded, state-administered program. The State Agency is responsible for reimbursing local providers who serve free healthy meals to children and teens 18 years and younger in low-income areas during summer months when school is not in session. The Montana SFSP has approximately 100 Summer Food Service Program sponsors and 250 sites state-wide.

The SFSP assists children by giving them the nutrition they need to keep them healthy and ready to learn during the summer months. Good nutrition helps with cognitive development which includes remembering, problem solving and decision-making. The SFSP helps fill the gap when school is not in session for these children. The SFSP provides meals in low income areas through various sponsors so these children can still receive healthy meals during the summer.

This position applies specialized knowledge related to School Nutrition Programs and the SFSP to communicate with schools and the public; interprets complex regulations to schools and the public; and assists schools in implementing policies and procedures to comply with the regulations. This position stays up to date on new regulations and amendments to existing regulations of the USDA, continually notifies and educates sponsors of new and changing laws, and monitors compliance with the SFSP federal requirements (both administrative requirements and nutrition standards).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Behaviors):

Knowledge in Federal program management, compliance monitoring, or institutional food service management and/or nutrition. Knowledge of pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes and regulations related to the Summer Food Service Program. Knowledge with interpreting state and federal regulations. Knowledge in interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, other agencies/programs at the federal and state level, local agency staff, school district or summer sponsor staff, and the public.

·Knowledge in written and verbal communication skills.

Skilled in analyzing data from various sources used by the School Nutrition Program and research results from professional studies. Skilled in using a computer and typical business applications.

Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience ):

Bachelor’s degree in nutrition/dietetics, family and consumer sciences, business, public administration, public health, human services, health science, communication, or a related field.

·Three years related experience in Federal program management in programs that serve children such as the Child and Adult Care Food Program, National School Lunch Program, WIC, or SNAP Program.

·Compliance monitoring, preferably for nutrition programs.

·Institutional food service management and/or nutrition.
