Position Summary & Responsibilities

Position Summary: This position performs duties as assigned by the Chief of Safety and Security in all areas of training, roving, campus duties, secure door position, and control centers as assigned for the department within departmental guidelines. Prepares and delivers training using various media to complete presentations on numerous subjects to S/S officers. Additional duties involve providing a safe and secure environment for patients, staff, and visitors, immediate response to dangerous situations, fires, pursuing, searching, apprehending, and returning walk a way’s or escapees, controlling riot conditions, and deals with dangerous, hostile, and combative patients. Skills should include good interpersonal communication and computer skills and the ability to deal with stressful situations, meet deadlines, and follow departmental guidelines, procedures, and policies. Will supervise officers as assigned.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

SUPERVISION

Provides leadership to all Officers on his/her assigned shift. Responsible for maintaining the correct number of Officers to ensure the Hospital’s safety and protection to patients, staff, and state property according to state laws, rules and regulations, or KDADs, the Safety/Security department, Life Safety Code, policies and procedures at LSH, SSH, and SPTP. Responsible for all the Officers on the shift to receive training in all required areas of security and safety including control center operations, secure door operations, roving, firefighting, and other areas as assigned. Formally evaluates subordinates at least annually.

LAW ENFORCEMENT

Exercises delegated statutory powers at the discretion of Superintendent, and as assigned by Chief of Safety and Security. Responds immediately to dangerous or emergency situations. Pursues, searches, apprehends and/or returns walkaways and escapees. Enforces State statutes, local laws and Larned State Hospital regulations. Collects statements, evidence, photos and video for proper documentation for the Special Investigator for possible prosecution. Enforces parking and traffic regulations. Conducts accident investigations. Patrols the Hospital grounds according to assignment. Prepares and submits appropriate reports in a timely manner. Reports and logs all activities in the department logbook and department Plexus log.

FIRE PROTECTION

Responds to fire alarms or calls on campus. Inspects firefighting equipment. Both attends and presents firefighting training.

SAFETY/SECURITY

Ensures safety of patients, visitors, and staff. Monitors hazardous weather conditions. Conducts searches of grounds and buildings. Responds to calls for medical emergencies. Responds to trouble calls.

CONTROL CENTERS

Operates and trains Control Center Officers utilizing safe, secure methods of operating the Control Center. Monitors and controls exterior access to buildings and internal movement of patients in building. Monitors and responds to fire and PPD alarm systems. Monitors video surveillance equipment both inside the buildings and on perimeter. Provides switchboard duties after regular hours, weekends and holidays Checks out state vehicles as required/requested Checks out post keys/pharmacy key cards as required. Reports and logs all activities on the department Plexus log and the department logbook.

EQUIPMENT & TRAINING

Supervisors will operate all equipment assigned to the department according to the policies and procedures. Ensures/Participates in security, firefighting and safety training. Attends Hospital in-service sessions as assigned. Conducts fire drills and safety training for Larned State Hospital.

OUTSIDE AGENCIES

Assists as needed according to rules, regulations and department / Hospital policies, investigations and arrests. Serving legal papers. Transferring custody. Provides information, evidentiary articles including photographs in the event of an escape. Provides oral and or written reports.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications :

Valid Kansas driver’s license.

Handle with Care Certification within 14 days of employment.

First Aid/CPR/AED Certification

Be able to demonstrate SCBA and Bunker Gear proficiency and completed Department of Corrections or KDADS training within the first 6 months of employment.

Some positions require an approved drug test unless the incumbent is moving from one safety-sensitive position to another safety-sensitive position within the same agency performing substantially similar duties.

High school diploma or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications :

Two or more years in Security, law enforcement, or firefighting. Two or more years of supervision in a law enforcement, safety security, or firefighting.

Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements : Ability to pass a KBI background and pre-employment drug test.
