Position Summary & Responsibilities:

Position Summary:

This position is an entry level officer that provides immediate supervision to all levels of the inmate population during a routine shift, resolves problems, and responds to emergencies with the goal of creating and maintaining a safe living and working environment.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

Supervises, maintains discipline and control of inmates in their living quarters, at meals, in classrooms, at work site, activity and program areas, in the hospital, kitchen, and bathing areas; while they are segregated for punitive, protective, and administrative purposes; and while they are on work details (inside and outside).

Qualifications:

Education : High School Diploma or GED

Licensing & Certification : Drivers License 

Minimum Qualifications : Graduation from high school or equivalent. Valid driver's license. Must be 18 years of age at the time of appointment. Free of misdemeanor conviction involving domestic battery as an adult, unless the conviction was for a battery committed prior to July 1, 1997, and has been expunged. Free of felony convictions. Candidate must take and pass a drug-screening test approved by the Division of Personnel Services.

Preferred Qualifications : Certification as Corrections Officer by the Secretary of Corrections. This certification is issued upon completion of the Corrections Officer Basic Training and must be renewed annually as prescribed by the Secretary. CPR as provided in annual inservice training. Weapons qualification annually. Ability to deal effectively with individuals. Knowledge and practices of supervising offenders confined to an adult multi-security correctional institutions. Ability to use physical force as warranted to subdue violent offenders.

Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements :Pass background check; receive positive work references; submit all required application documents; receive a Kansas Tax Clearance certificate within 10 days of conditional job offer; pass a drug screen and physical.
