Job Duties

The Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services’ (DBHDS) Office of Forensic Services is seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to serve as one of its Forensic Evaluators. This position primarily performs forensic evaluations to include, but not be limited to, competency to stand trial, sanity at the time of the alleged offense, Commissioner Appointed Evaluations, and other forensic related evaluations, such as violence risk assessments. In addition, this position acts as resource to other staff relevant to forensic psychological knowledge and provides training, when requested. This position reports to DBHDS Central Office, located in Richmond, Virginia, applicants may live anywhere in the Commonwealth, but travel is required within Virginia to meet the assessment needs of the Department and those that may occur at state forensic hospitals, jails, or prisons.

Minimum Qualifications

Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology or a related field. Strong clinical psychology skills, forensic evaluation skills, and experience with malingering assessment. Knowledge of national best practice standards for forensic evaluations, as well as advanced report writing skills and the ability to testify. Knowledge of Virginia forensic psychiatric service delivery system. Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities in mental health evaluation and treatment, particularly regarding the evaluation and treatment of individuals with behavioral health challenges who are involved in or are at risk of involvement in the criminal justice system. Skilled in the legal basis for psychiatric care for this population, and parameters thereof. Strong oral and written communication skills. Advanced training and experience in forensic assessment and clinical psychology, including diagnosis of various disorders. Excellent time and project management skills, as well as the ability to work independently.

Additional Considerations

Specific knowledge regarding all aspects of performing mental health evaluations/treatment for the courts, program development and implementation of therapeutic methods with consumers having forensic status in psychiatric facilities, and in the community. Licensed in Clinical Psychology in the Commonwealth of Virginia or another state. License-eligible applicants who have completed their post-doctoral supervision hours and only need to pass the EPPP will be considered.
