Summary

The United States Capitol Police (USCP) safeguards the Congress, Members of Congress, employees, visitors, and Congressional buildings and grounds from crime, disruption, and terrorism. We protect and secure Congress so it can fulfill its constitutional and legislative responsibilities in a safe, secure and open environment.

Duties

The Peer Support Program iscomprised of various trained department employees. The program functions withthe purpose of serving others in their times of need. The Peer Support Program operatesunder the auspices of the Howard C. Liebengood Center for Wellness (LCW), whichis a USCP office that offers wellness resources, peer support and USCP EmployeeAssistance Program (EAP) services to all USCP employees.

The Peer Support Specialist is responsible for working withemployees (in a one-on-one or group capacity) to offer support and resources incollaboration with the LCW. The Peer Support Specialist will be activated toassist employees when a traumatic or critical incident occurs in the workplaceand/or in their personal lives. This support may occur as a result of vehicleaccidents with injuries to an employee or others, active threats, line of dutydeath, or serious injury. Peer Support Specialists may also be deployed insupport of other agencies during or after an active threat situation. PeerSupport Specialists perform additional follow-up communications through avariety of methods, to ensure that everyone connected to the traumatic orcritical incident receives appropriate support.

Follows the direction of the Peer Support TeamLeader and Peer Support Commander. Using the Critical Incident StressManagement (CISM) model, Peer Support Specialists provide critical incidentstress debriefings and defusings. Works with the LCW staff to ensure referralsfor follow up care are accomplished. Attends regularly scheduled stressmitigation check-ins with the USCP EAP, or as directed by the Peer Support TeamLeader/Peer Support Commander. Participates in all in-service trainings and allother activities as directed. Multiple vacancies exist. The number of PeerSupport Specialist positions will be determined by the needs of the Department.The selection list will be active for a period of one (1) year from the date ofapproval of the selection memorandum unless an applicant withdraws his/herapplication in writing through the Office of Human Resources (OHR).
