The Brandywine Zoo is managed by Delaware State Parks with the support of the Delaware Zoological Society. This quaint facility is home to a variety of species of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians. At Brandywine Zoo, visitors return again and again to see our animals in natural settings.

Summary Statement

This seasonal year-round, Zoo Grounds Keeper position will be responsible for maintaining the grounds, buildings, and non-animal spaces in the Zoo. This includes but is not limited to horticulture and landscaping (planting, weeding, pruning, watering, mowing, etc.), seasonal weather preparation and cleanup (leaf removal, snow, and ice clearing), event support (set up, break down, etc.), building upkeep (pressure washing, cleaning gutters, vacuuming, restroom cleaning, and refuse removal), maintaining supplies and equipment, and public interaction as a member of Zoo staff.

Other duties may include assisting with deliveries, minor repairs, and other duties as assigned. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. This position is required to operate light duty equipment such as hand trucks, mowers, and various lawn equipment. Applicants must be available to work some weekends, evenings, and holidays as needed.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all position in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class. Since class specifications are descriptive and not restrictive, incumbents can complete job duties of similar kind not specifically listed here.
Performs grounds maintenance tasks such as mowing, trimming, landscape bed maintenance, trash removal, leaf removal and snow/ice clearing. Performs custodial services in restrooms, offices and other buildings. Maintains public restroom upkeep. Transports trash to disposal area. Operation of landscaping equipment and use of hand and power tools. Set-up, monitoring and clean-up support for Zoo programs and events. Maintains good public relations with visitors and staff. Provide excellent customer service and Zoo information to visitors. Must be able to demonstrate responsibility, dependability and good communication skills. Maintain a positive attitude. Other duties as required.
