The Brandywine Zoo, operated by Delaware State Parks with the assistance of the Delaware Zoological Society, serves as a charming habitat for a diverse array of mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians.Position Summary
This full-time role encompasses a variety of responsibilities, including but not limited to: daily sanitation, nutrition management, and observation of animals within a designated area, basic upkeep tasks, public engagement through educational talks and visitor interactions, training through operant conditioning, exhibit upkeep, general grounds maintenance, record documentation, and other essential functions for daily operations. The position requires work in both indoor and outdoor environments under varying weather conditions. Candidates must be prepared to work on weekends and holidays as required.Key Responsibilities
The following responsibilities are essential functions that are typical for all roles within this classification and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties for any single position.
Upholds the mission of the Brandywine Zoo by fostering environmental conservation through engaging educational experiences that connect visitors with wildlife. Contributes to the overarching goals of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, focusing on animal welfare, public engagement, and species conservation. Collaborates with zookeepers, veterinary staff, behavioral management teams, and curatorial staff to ensure exemplary standards of animal care and welfare. Monitors the health and behavior of animals, reporting any significant observations. Maintains clean, safe, and well-kept animal habitats and facilities. Ensures proper maintenance of grounds and equipment. Addresses visitor inquiries and educates the public regarding animal care and handling. Compiles and maintains records and reports utilizing various online systems, including Zoological Information Management Systems (ZIMS). Demonstrates accountability, reliability, and effective communication skills. Maintains a positive demeanor. Performs additional duties as assigned.Qualifications
Requirements for Animal Care Specialist Candidates are required to submit a resume with their online application or utilize the resume section in DEL to provide a comprehensive account of how their education, training, and/or experience fulfill each job requirement, including previous employers, responsibilities, and employment/training dates (month/year).Applicants must possess education, training, and/or experience demonstrating proficiency in the following areas:
A minimum of six months of experience in feeding, monitoring dietary needs, and caring for animals in a facility such as a zoo, animal hospital, or shelter. At least six months of experience in documenting, interpreting, and communicating observations related to animal health and behavior. Knowledge in biology, natural resources, wildlife management, or environmental studies. A valid driver's license (not suspended, revoked, or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
