Overview

The Brandywine Zoo, under the management of Delaware State Parks and supported by the Delaware Zoological Society, is a charming facility that houses a diverse array of mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians.

Position Summary

This full-time role encompasses a variety of responsibilities, including but not limited to: daily sanitation, nourishment, and monitoring of animals within a designated area, basic upkeep tasks, public engagement through educational talks and guest interactions, operant conditioning training, exhibit upkeep, fundamental grounds maintenance, record management, and other essential functions necessary for daily operations. Work will be conducted both indoors and outdoors, subject to varying weather conditions. Candidates must be prepared to work weekends and holidays as needed.

Key Responsibilities

The following are key responsibilities that are fundamental to all roles within this classification and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any single position.

Uphold the mission of the Brandywine Zoo by fostering environmental conservation through engaging educational experiences that connect visitors with wildlife. Contribute to the overarching goals of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, focusing on animal welfare, public engagement, and species conservation. Collaborate with zookeepers, veterinary staff, behavioral management, and Curator teams to ensure exemplary levels of animal care and welfare for the collection. Monitor the health and behavior of animals, reporting any significant changes. Maintain clean, safe, and well-kept animal exhibits and facilities. Ensure proper maintenance of grounds and equipment. Address visitor inquiries and educate them regarding animal care and handling. Keep accurate records and reports utilizing various online systems, including Zoological Information Systems (ZIMS). Demonstrate responsibility, reliability, and effective communication skills. Maintain a positive demeanor. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications for Animal Care Specialist Candidates must submit a resume with their online application or utilize the resume tab in DEL to provide a comprehensive overview of how their education, training, and/or experience align with each job requirement, including employer, responsibilities, and duration of employment/training.
Applicants must possess education, training, and/or experience demonstrating proficiency in the following areas:
A minimum of six months of experience in feeding, monitoring dietary needs, and caring for animals in a facility such as a zoo, animal hospital, or shelter. At least six months of experience in documenting, interpreting, and communicating observations related to animal health and behavior. Knowledge in biology, natural resources, wildlife management, or environmental studies. A valid driver's license (not suspended, revoked, or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
