Description

Hennepin County is seeking a Principal Communications Specialist to provide strategic communications planning and coordination to the County's opioid response. A core responsibility of this position is to ensure that Hennepin County opioid communications are developed with a public health prevention and racial equity lens, and in line with best practices and standards.
 
This position will report to the public health communications manager and will work closely with the Public Health Communications team, as well as program partners, subject matter experts, leaders, and others across the county, and in the community. They will develop and implement communications plans, projects, strategies, and campaigns, and assist with media, in support of Hennepin County’s opioid response, in keeping with the expectations of the national opioid settlement.

Location and hours:

This position is hybrid and will be performed onsite at the Hennepin County Health Services building 525 Portland Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55415, and remotely as job duties require. Work hours will typically be Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with occasional evenings and/or weekends. While this position is designated as hybrid, based on current requirements hires must reside in Minnesota or Wisconsin.
 
New employees who are hired into remote or hybrid positions between January 2, 2022 and December 31, 2024, will receive $500 toward the cost of establishing consistent internet connectivity, payable upon completion of 6 months of employment. 
 

About this position type:
This is a full-time, limited duration, benefit earning limited duration position expected to last for up to 2 years. You must be a  current regular or probationary employee of Hennepin County to apply for this position. Current limited duration employees not eligible to apply.

In this position, you will:
Write and produce strategic communications products for internal and external communications according to best practices (i.e., usability, accessibility, plain language, and branding). Collaborate with subject matter experts, including clinical researchers, epidemiologists, and data analysts, to use data to shape strategy and messaging. Plan, implement, and evaluate public awareness campaigns, helping to develop creative multichannel content. Provide direction to communications specialists, graphic designers, and other communicators, including contractors and community partners, to develop content and products. Work with partners to coordinate, create, and implement communication plans, strategies, and messages, and share learnings.  Amplify partners’ messaging on opioid prevention, response, treatment, and recovery, leveraging Hennepin County channels. Communicate with the public, staff, community leaders, county administration, elected officials, and the media through proactive sharing of opioid response activities (e.g., news releases, story pitches, preparing for interviews, blog posts, etc.). Support special events, news conferences, public meetings, and other outreach efforts related to the county’s opioid response. Perform other public health communications duties as assigned. Apply a health and racial equity lens to all communications to help ensure: “All people who live, work and play in Hennepin County experience optimal health grounded in health and racial equity.” Need to have: One of the following:Bachelor's degree in journalism, English, communications, mass communications, marketing, media studies, graphic design, photojournalism, telecommunications, visual communications, public administration or a closely-related field and three years of related professional experienceTwo years of college and five years of related professional experienceSeven years or more of related professional experience in strategic communications supporting a broad range of programs, projects, and services.  Nice to have:
