Position highlights As a Training Officer with POSTC, you will be part of a team that is committed to developing instructional best practices for police recruits and in-service law enforcement officers. These positions are full-time, 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday. In this role, you will have the opportunity to: Develop lesson plans, curriculum and subject matter experts; Research Connecticut and National Laws to ensure training reflects best police practices; Supervise recruits;  Coordinate with multiple outside municipal and state agencies; Coordinate recruit sessions and graduations; Assist satellites; Plan and schedule training as well as ensuring Instructors are scheduled and meet certification compliance; Assist with writing training bulletins and programs with new Public Acts;  Perform other related duties as required to promote the mission of the agency; More details can be found in the . PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in preparing and conducting recruit and in-service courses of instruction for municipal and/or state police personnel.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Serves as subject matter specialist for a core of subject modules in municipal or state police training; Develops curriculum for courses; Researches subject matter to keep current with laws, trends and state of the art developments in field; Reviews and evaluates textbooks; Creates visual aids for each area; Structures classes and develops appropriate teaching techniques, e.g. role playing, case histories, etc.; Provides demonstration and evaluation of practical skills; Constructs subject matter examinations; Evaluates student performance; Maintains discipline; Arranges for guest lecturers including visual aids, hand out material and scheduling of classes; Performs validation research to determine value and application of training; Maintains permanent file of student records; Serves as coordinator for a resident or commuter class on a rotating basis; Orients new students; Assigns dormitory rooms; Issues uniforms; Constructs class seating plan; Schedules classes; Schedules audiovisual equipment use; Assigns work details; Administers discipline; Counsels students; Conducts inspections; Administers pre- and post-examinations; May represent the agency at meetings, conferences or other law enforcement training activities; Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Considerable knowledge of current police practices and procedures; principles and practices of adult training and educational methods and techniques; Knowledge of research techniques; Considerable interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Five (5) years of experience in a federal, state or municipal law enforcement agency with some experience conducting formal law enforcement training programs.

NOTE: Formal training is defined as training conducted in a classroom and/or workshop setting with set training goals and objectives and a formalized lesson plan. On the job one-on-one training is not considered formal training.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

College training in adult education, criminal justice, police administration or police science may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of one (1) year for an Associate's degree, two (2) years for a Bachelor's degree or three (3) years for a Master's degree.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience providing in person, online or hybrid law enforcement training, including developing lesson plans and curriculum; Experience leading subject matter research and implementing training projects or plans; Experience with policy implementation for a Law Enforcement Program or Agency; Documented experience with physical training, including Emergency Vehicle Operations Course, Defensive Tactics, Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) Spray or Firearms programs.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to some discomfort and danger of physical injury while instructing inexperienced recruits in the use of firearms, chemical weapons and self defense.
