Job Overview

Performs field, laboratory and/or office duties conducting routine collection of air/water samples.

This position entails performing technical fieldwork such as environmental gardening, planting, care and maintenance of desired plants and removal of undesired plants with manual and herbicide methods at assigned sites. This position will participate in various activities on wetland areas including exotic and nuisance plant control, trash clean up, site assessments and re-vegetation of sites. This position is 99% field work in and around wetland sites. This position requires entering and working in water sometimes chest high with wildlife present. A Florida Pesticide Applicator License (Aquatic) must be acquired within the Probationary period.

Min $35,796.80 annually

Mid $49,795.20 annually

Duties and Responsibilities

Note: The following duties are illustrative and not exhaustive. Depending on assigned area of responsibility, incumbents in the position may perform one or more of the activities described below.

Supervises and coordinates the acquisition and handling of field and/or laboratory environmental data. Monitors incoming solid waste at disposal facilities for acceptability and presence of hazardous waste, keeps records and reports violations. Inspects incoming solid waste at landfills and prepares reports on contents by type, volume, and composition. Initiates actions for the removal of hazardous or undesirable material from landfills. Prepares various reports and data summaries for departmental dissemination. Reviews data generated by various departments and recommends or takes necessary action. May operate, maintain, and calibrate various environmental monitoring equipment; and provides other general technical assistance as required. Supervises the work of subordinate staff by scheduling, assigning and reviewing work, providing training and counseling, and evaluating performance. Performs others related duties as required. 

Job Specifications

Knowledge of environmental inspection, sampling and collection methods. Knowledge of environmental data collection, recording, and laboratory equipment. Skill in the operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment. Skill in the use and operation of environmental collection, recording, and laboratory equipment. Ability to identify and differentiate hazardous, non-hazardous, and recyclable solid waste material.  Ability to use a computer and related software. Ability to plan, organize, and supervise the work of others. Ability to collect, organize, and evaluate data and to develop logical conclusions. Ability to work effectively with others.

Physical Requirements

Work is typically performed in an office or laboratory environment. May require sitting for extended periods of time. Work requires walking, standing, stooping, and bending.

Work Category

Medium work - Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Minimum Qualifications Required

Associate's degree in Natural Science; AND Two years’ experience in environmental inspection or evaluation; or in the operation of environmental monitoring equipment; OR An equivalent combination of education (not less that possession of a High School diploma/GED), training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies noted above; AND Possession of a valid Florida Driver’s License.

Emergency Management Responsibilities

In the event of an emergency or disaster, an employee may be required to respond promptly to duties and responsibilities as assigned by the employee’s department, the County’s Office of Emergency Management, or County Administration. Such assignments may be for before, during or after the emergency/disaster.

Career Progression

Employees in this classification that acquire the competencies and minimum qualifications for the next tier will be able to apply for promotional opportunities through a competitive selection process. Employees will not automatically be upgraded to the next tier. Reclassifying a position is based on business need and financial impact and is not based solely on the job competencies or qualifications of the incumbent.
