Summary

The Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor (LPMHC) provides mental health therapy for eligible Veterans in the Mental Health and Behavioral Sciences department at the Salisbury VA Medical Center. Provision of clinical services may also extend to the Kernersville HCC and Charlotte HCC.

Services will be provided in our Substance Abuse Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (SARRTP).

Duties

FUNCTIONS OF POSITION Independently performs case finding functions and outreach, identify and screening patients for psychosocial needs. Incumbent must possess the knowledge and ability to independently implement evidenced based treatment modalities, provide counseling or psychotherapy for individuals, families, and groups. Independently conduct psychosocial assessments. Develops treatment plans in collaboration with Veteran/family and with the interdisciplinary treatment team if applicable. Incumbent possesses the skills to offer psychosocial interventions and measures outcome-based interventions. Incumbent can coordinate community-based services, including information and referral for additional services from other VA programs, other government programs and community agency programs. Independently identifies high-risk patients and provides crisis intervention services, seeking to address the cause as well as the presenting complaint, coordinates with family conferences and serves as liaison to family members. Must have a high level of skill and expertise to establish and maintain effective therapeutic relationships with veterans in the Mental Health Center and/or their families. The incumbent is able to independently work with veterans and their families who are experiencing a wide range of complicated medical, psychiatric, emotional, behavioral, and psychosocial problems. Develops patient education material/modules and assist with Veteran Peer and Family activities as assigned. Must actively participate as a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team and actively participate through collaboration with veterans and family as well as interdisciplinary treatment team members in the development and implementation of a client centered treatment plan. Must possess a working knowledge and experience in use of medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities, and treatment procedures, including acute, chronic, and traumatic illnesses, common medications, and their effects/side effects. Independently provides consultation services to other staff regarding psychosocial needs of Veterans and impact of psychosocial problems on health care and adherence to treatment plan. Ability to evaluate incumbent's own practice through professional peer review, case conference and other organizational means. Incumbent can communicate effectively, both orally and in writing with people from varied backgrounds. Must serve as a liaison between veterans and/or their families and VA and community resources to ensure thorough delivery of services. This involves coordination of veteran and family involvement in the development of treatment plans and aftercare. Able to meet the needs of customers while supporting VA missions. Consistently communicates and treats customers (Veterans, their representatives, visitors, and all VA staff) in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner. Incumbent is able to provide customer with consistent information according to established policies and procedures. Performs other duties as assigned. Administrative Functions: Is responsible for supporting the mission, policies, and procedures of the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), the appropriate Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN), and the Salisbury VAMC. Is willing to serve on committees, work groups, and task forces at the facility as deemed appropriate by the supervisor to include Performance Improvement, Peer Review, and Performance Measures. Attends and participates in administrative and informational meetings held by the Program Manager, MH&BS Chief, and/or Medical Center Director. Is responsible for furthering one's own professional growth through continuing education and for ensuring continuing education appropriate to the area of assignment. Assists as requested, with Staff Education and training on assigned topics. Can demonstrate knowledge and skill in the use of software applications for drafting documents and data management as well as other computer systems in use by the VHA. Can maintain a level of productivity and quality consistent with the complexity of the assignment and consistent with professional standards, Joint Commission standards, and facility standards. Work Schedule : Monday - Friday 8:00am - 4:30pm
