Introduction

Job Summary

The Loudoun County Office of the Commissioner of the Revenue is seeking a Supervisory Tax Compliance Officer. This position is responsible for frontline supervision of the Tax Compliance Officers and reports to the Deputy Commissioner, Business Tax Compliance. Supervisory functions will include planning, organizing and assigning work, as well as reviewing and evaluating work. Additionally, this position recommends selection of staff, trains staff and provides for their professional development, and administers corrective actions as necessary. In addition to supervisory functions, this position also carries a case load performing the functions of a Tax Compliance Officer alongside of those that they supervise.

Duties include review of business tax assessments, reassessments, and tax compliance field work to ensure accurate, fair, and equitable taxation in accordance with prior precedent, federal laws, state laws, and local ordinances. In addition to supervisory tasks, the Supervisory Tax Compliance Officer carries their own case load which includes performing complex tax compliance work, using discovery methods to ensure that all businesses are on the tax rolls. This position conducts field visits and interacts with business owners to obtain information, counsel on proper filing procedures, ensure that business owners understand local tax obligations, registers unregistered businesses, and assists taxpayers who are out of compliance.

Candidates should be seasoned professionals with proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, County officials, members of the business community, their representatives, and the general public. Candidates must have the ability to manage a high-volume workload, collaborate effectively with management, assist internal and external customers as required, and resolve conflicts. The successful candidate must be able to understand and apply state law, county ordinances, relevant agency guidance, and case law to specific situations.

Hiring salary commensurate with experience. 

Minimum Qualifications

Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelors degree, preferably in Business or a related field, and four (4) years of related work experience. At least 2 years of the related work experience shall be local or state business tax assessment experience. 

Virginia local business taxation experience and/or prior field work experience is preferred. Familiarity with business operations in Loudoun County, customer service experience, and/or local tax compliance experience is also preferred. 

Job Contingencies and Special Requirements

Successful candidate will undergo a criminal background, credit and DMV record checks.
