General Statement

Under general supervision, prepares multi-discipline engineering drawings used for contract bidding and construction using computer aided drafting and design (CADD) tools; reviews drawings for conformance with District CADD standards; supports project managers and project engineers in setting and meeting schedules for project deliverables; and supervises subordinate draftsmen.

Using CADD, plans and prepares accurate, complete and organized representations of architectural, civil, mechanical, electrical, process and structural engineering design features from design notes, sketches, verbal instructions and direction from engineers and architects. Generates complex CADD engineering drawings in both two-dimensions and three-dimensions. Prepares and revises drawings in accordance with District CADD standards and procedures. Uses CADD software to provide data, generate reports, maintain data bases, prepare quantity take-offs, prepare calculations and other related functions. Creates and updates Master Underground Process Piping Survey (MUPPS) drawings and data bases. Confers with engineers, architects, and other draftsmen within the section, to discuss and determine design requirements, drawing layouts, application of CADD standards and procedures and to help set up and assimilate the production of CADD drawings to meet overall project schedules. Archives CADD drawings; researches archives to retrieve drawings needed for current projects; maintains files of standard drawings and details; and maintains CADD project files. Remains current on CADD software techniques and tools. Assigns, supervises and reviews work; ensures staff compliance with District policies and procedures including Personnel Rules and Administrative Procedures; completes performance reviews; addresses employee complaints and grievances; may recommend employment actions such as hiring, transfer, suspension, promotion or discharge.

Other Job Functions

Trains and assists engineers in the use of CADD software. Reviews and updates as-built drawings from construction contracts. Manipulates digital data from various sources to prepare plots and drawings. Produces graphical displays, charts, tables and exhibits involving the use of CADD software and digital images. Maintains plotter equipment. Performs field investigations and measurements on existing installations. Performs other duties as assigned.

Environmental Conditions

Work is performed in a typical office environment and requires the use of standard office equipment including computers. Work also includes visiting areas where hard hat, gloves, ear protection, safety glasses, and/or safety shoes may be required.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of engineering drafting and computer aided drafting and design in both two-dimensions and three-dimensions. Thorough knowledge of the latest version of CADD software utilized by the District to fully utilize techniques and tools for work efficiency, drawing accuracy, generation of information and manipulation and management of digital data. Advanced understanding of the drafting approach for engineered structures, sewers, electrical equipment, civil works, mechanical equipment, process and instrumentation flow diagrams, and architectural details. Knowledge of the materials of construction and equipment used in District facilities. Skill in the use of computer aided drafting and design equipment and software. Ability to prepare graphic displays, charts, tables and exhibits involving the use of CADD software and digital images. Ability to plan and supervise the work of others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale. Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Possession of an Associates Degree in computer aided drafting and design (CADD) in the Architectural/Engineering/Construction (AEC) discipline and three years of drafting experience in support of professional architects or engineers, which must include the use of computer-aided drafting and design equipment and software.

Substitution

Computer aided drafting and design (CADD) experience in support of professional architects or engineers may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Promotional Requirement

One year of experience with the District as an Engineering Draftsman II. Civil service status as an Engineering Draftsman II.
