Your duties at a glance

As a Child Welfare supervisor 2, you will:

  • Supervise staff ensuring the mission of the Department of Human Services is carried out by providing services directly to children and families using cultural competency and humility, demonstrating the Departments core values, providing excellent customer service, and carrying out administrative functions as needed.

  • Assure that staff operate within good social work practices, state and federal laws, department policy and procedures.

  • Provide general training, orientation, mentoring, consultations, continuous review of programs and standards which affect the quality, safety, and permanency of children's lives.

  • Be responsible for maintaining cooperative working relationships with community partners, children, and families.

  • Make decisions about the level and type of services provided to client families.

  • Provide general personnel actions such as interviewing, hiring, performance appraisals, disciplinary actions, time management, orientation, training, assigning work, and mentoring for new employees. 

  • Provide case consultation and individual coaching regarding development of case plans, placement decisions, child protective services, and treatment interventions.  Cases may be sensitive, difficult, or complex in nature.

  • Remain informed of the services, benefits, referral processes of agencies and community organizations, as well as policy, procedure, and rule changes.

What you need to qualify

  • A bachelor’s degree in human services or a field related to human services and

    • one year of lead work, supervision, or progressively related human services experience; or

  • A bachelor’s degree unrelated to human services and

    • completion of coursework equivalent to certification consistent with Oregon Caseworker Competency and

    • one year of lead work, supervision, or progressively related experience in human services; or

  • An associate degree and

    • three years of human services related experience.

    • one year of which must have included lead work, supervision, or progressively related experience; or

  • An associate degree and

    • completion of coursework equivalent to certification consistent with Oregon Caseworker Competency AND

    • one year lead work, supervision, or progressively related experience in human services.

Essential attributes

We are looking for candidates with:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of identifying and implementing child welfare policy, procedure, processes, implementing the Child Welfare Vision for Transformation, and experience working with the Oregon Safety Model.

  • Demonstrated ability to mobilize, engage, and build collaborative relationships with community partners and people. This includes demonstrating commitment to antiracism work and conducting work through equitable practices.

  • Experience utilizing a trauma-informed lens to make sound judgements, identify successful solutions to problems, and provide recommendations regarding child safety decision and child placement.

  • Demonstrated Ability to navigate high-pressure, fast-moving, work situations while portraying calmness and reassurance to staff.

  • Experience analyzing data to make informed decisions for practice improvements.

  • Communication skills that include the ability to adapt communication style to the intended audience and present information clearly and precisely in both verbal and written formats.

  • Demonstrated dedication to the growth and development of others. This includes experience coming alongside staff to provide feedback, coach, and effectively explain the “why” behind decisions.
