The Sustainability Coordinator, Outreach and Engagement is a core member of the University of Virginia's Office for Sustainability team who will provide outreach and engagement support in alignment with the educational, research, health care and public service mission of the University, with a focus on waste source reduction, material diversion, and waste education. The University of Virginia has committed to a goal of reducing waste 70% by 2030 from a 2010 baseline; collaboration across the university and ongoing education is an important component of meeting this goal. This position primarily engages students, but also occasionally faculty and staff, in University-wide sustainability initiatives through behavior change and educational programs to advance UVA’s 2030 Sustainability Plan . This position reports to the Sustainability Manager, Outreach and Engagement.

We support workplace flexibility when appropriate but 100% remote work is not possible. Hours may vary based on events; thus, the position will occasionally require working on nights and weekends. This position in unable to support visa sponsorship.

Responsibilities include:
Coordinating Major Waste Programs
Coordinate the logistics of Green Game volunteer events, including all football games and a handful of other events at Athletics venues
Coordinate the student Zero Waste Ambassadors compost-sorting program, including logistics and troubleshooting for two waste sorting areas
Coordinate the end-of-year Hoos Reuse move-out donation drive, including logistics with key UVA and community stakeholders
Support Two Student Teams - with guidance from Outreach & Engagement Manager
Advise and support Waste Minimization Team, three student employees who handle the day-to-day operations of the Zero Waste Ambassadors program
Advise and support the Green Athletics Team, three student employees who handle volunteer recruitment and operations of Green Game volunteer events
Other Waste Program Support
Raise awareness through tabling, delivering presentations, hosting events, setting up tours, answering waste-related questions, collaborating with student organizations, and more
Promote existing waste-minimizing resources (including ROSE, ReUse Store, water refill stations, cardboard recycling at move-in)
Help support zero waste events (promotion, trainings, hands-on help as needed)
Help conduct small-scale waste audits and follow-up on pilots and when new infrastructure is implemented
General Sustainability Assistance
Serve as one of the Office for Sustainability’s purchasers, requiring detailed expense reporting and responsiveness to the needs of team members and student collaborators
Provide general support for the Office for Sustainability as needed, such as scheduling meetings, working events, and helping keep materials organized
Be involved in working groups and committees as requested, sometimes scheduling meetings, recording meeting minutes, and executing relevant projects between meetings

Required Qualifications:
A demonstrated interest in waste reduction
Experience in sustainability-related outreach, communication, or education
Strong organizational skills, ability to manage several projects at once
Excellent communication, writing, presentation skills with a variety of audiences

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience coordinating groups of students, including volunteers
Experience coordinating event logistics
Experience working in a higher education institution or other educational setting

Required Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in a related field
A minimum of one-year relevant experience, 2+ years preferred.
In lieu of a degree, a combination of five years of relevant education and/or experience may be considered.

Anticipated Hiring Range : $21.64 - $24.04 per hour ($45k - $50k annually); commensurate with qualification and experience. This is a full-time, 40 hour per week non-exempt position with UVA benefits .
