General Overview

Under the general supervision of the Chief Financial Officer, the Budget Director, and Accountant V, the Accountant III is responsible for the application of accounting principles, methods, and principles to accounting and auditing and clerical functions combined with responsibility for performing accounting work connected with such functions for various Sheriff’s Office funds.May perform professional accounting and auding work of an advanced nature.Work involves good knowledge of basic accounting principles, methods and procedures and the application of such to individual assignments and problems.Majority of work is performed with a minimum of detailed instructions and review and involves some responsibility for varying or adapting procedures within prescribed supervisory and regulatory limits.May assist with supervision of extensive accounting functions. Responsible for maintaining the financial records by accurately recording the day-to-day financial transactions.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

Check and verify source documents such as invoices, receipts, and computer printouts.

Allocate and post financial transaction details to subsidiary books.

Transfer data to general ledger.

Reconcile and balance all accounts.

Draw up financial statements (trial balance, income statement, balance sheet).

Collate and analyze account data and generate financial reports.

Track and maintain inventory records.

Maintain internal controls systems.

Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable.

Prepare checks, payments, and bank deposits.

Comply with relevant reporting requirements.

Assist with audits.

Maintain records of financial transactions by posting and verifying.

Maintain subsidiary accounts by posting, verifying, and allocating transactions.

Reconcile entries to balance subsidiary accounts.

Maintain a balanced general ledger.

Prepare a trial balance.

Prepare financial reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing accounting for information.

Maintain complete filing system to support financial records.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

Under general direction of accounting, auditing, and management personnel, responsible for the application of accounting principles, methods, and procedures to accounting and auditing programs of considerable complexity and broad scope.

Thorough knowledge of principles, methods, and procedures related to general accounting and specialized knowledge of governmental accounting.

Knowledge of federal, state, county and departmental regulations, laws, limitations, policies, and procedures as they might affect all aspects of accounting, auditing, and reporting for Evictions Accounts.

Ability to plan, organize and supervise projects involving an important unit or segment of the total accounting and auditing program.Ability to train others in procedures and to evaluate work results of individual employees and the organizational unit in terms of accounting efficiency.

Ability to evaluate effectiveness of existing accounting systems from viewpoint of soundness and services to Sheriff’s Finance Office and to recommend practical changes of new installations.

Initiative, resourcefulness, and good judgement in performance of majority of duties; ability to make independent decisions on major problems within accounting principles and management policies.

General knowledge of basic accounting principles, methods, and procedures.

Ability to follow and apply general and special instructions and procedures.

Initiative and resourcefulness in forwarding essential information to superiors for further action.

Good attention to detail, ability to proof, verify and edit complex data, transcribe, and cross reference data from a CRT screen and documents.

Ability to write and communicate in a complete and concise manner.

Skill and proficiency in the use of keyboard as applied to the operation of typewriters, word possessors and CRT terminals.

Ability to meet level of responsibility for planning laying out individual assignments.

Skill and/or ability to maintain and balance a cash drawer and accurately account for monies or payments received.

Ability to follow-up in a thorough and timely manner, relative to unresolved business.

Good communication skills: ability to gather information from taxpayers and convey information.

Skill and accuracy in the control, organization and maintenance of files and records according to various methods.

Ability to coordinate several tasks and perform well under pressure, plan and conduct multiple assignments within specified time frame/deadlines.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field of study.

A minimum of one year full-time paid practical work experience utilizing the skills, knowledge, and ability of an advanced bookkeeper, comparable to those characterized herein and applicable to area of assignment.Additional training and experience may be desirable.
